4 Jours de Dunkerque – Race Report

4 Jours de Dunkerque

17th May – Stage 4: La Chapelle d’Armentières – Cassel

The penultimate day of racing in France saw the peloton take on a flatter opening part to the stage, before several laps of a challenging loop in Cassel; which featured a couple of climbs, one of which was cobbled. Team Picnic PostNL did a good job early on to stay safe and protect finisher Tobias Lund Andresen before the circuit began. From there, it was a race of attrition with Development program rider Ryan Gal riding strongly to make the front group of around 40 alongside Lund Andresen; supporting him as best as possible.

Lund Andresen followed a few moves in the final 30 kilometres which were then reeled in, and a late attacking move was closed down on the last steep ramp; setting up a big fight to the line on the punchy climb. Lund Andresen dug deep and gave everything he had, taking fifth place at the line and with that moving up to fourth on GC ahead of tomorrow’s final stage.

Lund Andresen expressed: “Today was hard. It was controlled until the laps. The break had a big gap of around six minutes, and there wasn’t so much a big chase, it was just a strong tempo each lap. We did a good job to keep me in the front pretty much from the first second of the laps onwards. From there we could stay there. When you have the front early and kind of keep it. With around 60 kilometres to go the peloton was pretty small and Ryan did a really good job to keep me in front the whole time and out of the wind. I had to cover a couple of moves in the last 30 kilometres but it ended up being a bigger group coming to the finish. It was then just going all-out to the line and we could take fifth on the day – which I’m satisfied with on a day like this.”

16th May – Stage 3: Valenciennes – Famars

A day over the cobbles at the 4 Jours de Dunkerque made for some full-gas racing from the flag drop. Team Picnic PostNL started the stage with six riders as Robbe Dhondt didn’t start due to his crash the previous day. The remaining five riders rallied around Tobias Lund Andresen throughout the afternoon, and despite some bad luck at points, the team were always present for the key moments.

In the finale, Lund Andresen was well positioned by the team and followed ably over the cobbles and into a small leading group that was brought back. From that group though, one rider launched a late attack and with the peloton looking at each other they stayed away to take the win while Lund Andresen sprinted to fourth on the day.

Lund Andresen expressed: “Today was pretty much an all-out day all stage: with a cobbled section after only four kilometres of racing and from there two sections every lap. I had a puncture early on the second section the first time around, and broke my wheel so I had to run the last couple of hundred metres of that section. You could say the race was pretty hard from the start for me. We kept fighting as a team and the guys kept coming back to me and bringing me into position. In the end it’s not super satisfying to finish fourth and just outside the bonus seconds but we showed good legs today. Hopefully we can keep that up and get the stage win in one of the last two days.”

14th May – Stage 1: Sainte-Catherine – Amiens

After a taste of racing action again in Tuesday’s Classique Dunkerque, the five-day stage race of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque got underway on Wednesday with an expected sprint finish into Amiens. A strong breakaway ensured that the pace in the peloton was high throughout the day, but Team Picnic PostNL committed to the chase and were one of the most active teams in making sure that those ahead were caught.

Some big pulls saw the break reeled in within ten kilometres to go, and a strong tempo was set over the top of the last climb which stretched things out. Pat Eddy grouped up with fast finisher Tobias Lund Andresen and brought him around the final corner, dropping him off in a while right at the head of the bunch. Just as Lund Andresen was about to open up his full sprint, he unfortunately lost a bit of momentum, but still could kick again to take a strong second place for the team.

Lund Andresen said: “We took control early as the break was a strong one so we didn’t want to play around, and we were the first team to start chasing. At one point to be honest I thought they might stay away but more teams helped and we had seven teams chasing to catch them. I think the guys showed great team spirit all day; they kept me positioned and out of trouble. In the end I was fighting alongside Pat, who brought me around the last corner in the wheel of Zingle. Just when I was going to kick I lost some momentum with someone on my inside and came up a bit too short in the end. I’m a bit disappointed as I felt that I lost the first place today and didn’t win the second place. I wanted to repay the team for all the work they did today, and to keep the momentum going after the Giro win yesterday; that also gave us motivation here. I’m sure we’re strong enough to win a stage here this week so we’ll keep racing like this.

Team Picnic PostNL coach Melvin Rulliere added: “The goal of the day was to sprint with Tobias. We took our responsibility as a team and we rode all day on the front. The breakaway was very strong and it was not simple to catch them. The guys stayed united and Tobias was ready to sprint for it in the finale. In the last straight line he was little bit blocked and couldn’t deliver a full sprint, but took a nice second place. The team spirit was again really good today and we will keep fighting for a victory here.”
