Alpes Isère Tour

30th May – Stage 3: Colombier-Saugnieu – Jons

Stage 3 of the Alpes Isère Tour covered 159 kilometers from Colombier-Saugnieu to Jons, featuring rolling terrain and some steep climbs. It was a day suited for both attackers and punchy sprinters. An early breakaway of six riders got away, but after taking a wrong turn at a roundabout, the group was caught by the peloton with about 20 kilometers to go. This led to a series of attacks, with Matteo Vanhuffel active on behalf of Team Picnic PostNL, following moves and launching a few attempts of his own. In the end, no one got away, and the stage was decided in a sprint in Jons. Jacob Bush was our first rider across the line and moves up to fourth place in the general classification.

After the stage, Bush said: “It was another hot and hard day of racing. As a team, we controlled the break formation well, and in the end, a few club riders got up the road. From there, we found our place in the bunch and lined up behind the teams controlling the breakaway on what was supposed to be the easiest day of the race. Halfway through the stage, another team went full gas on a climb, pushing their riders up quickly. The four of us still well placed in GC all made it into the front selection. Eventually, the group from behind came back, but the peloton remained reduced. There was no control in the bunch, so an 80km phase of attacks began. Again, as a team, I feel we were successful in not missing any moves. In the last 5km, it looked like we’d get a sprint. I tried to position myself well in the final kilometer but got blocked a bit on the outside, so I wasn’t able to launch anything. In the end, I finished 18th. We have a lot of cards to play going into the weekend’s mountain stages, so let’s see what we can do.”

29th May – Stage 2: Dolomieu – Satolas-et-Bonce

After a good opening day of racing, Team Picnic PostNL’s Development program continued with their aggressive style and got Jurgen Zomermaand in the break of the day after a big battle at the front of the peloton. Over the climbs the break thinned down and just one rider was left with Zomermaand out front, but they would both ultimately be reeled in by the peloton ahead of the finale.

A reduced peloton was coming towards the line together but a late attacking duo thwarted the fast-men of the bunch by escaping and taking the day. Jacob Bush led the team home in the peloton and with some riders on GC losing time, Bush and Matteo Vanhuffel move up to fifth and fourth respectively, while with the bonus seconds gained Zomermaand slots into ninth.

Bush said: “Overall it was another good day for us here after a nice start to the week yesterday. We got Jurgen in the break after a pretty hard fight which put us in a good position for the next phase of the race. Myself Matteo and Vincent spent a lot of time at the front just marking out moves as no real chase was taking place but the pace was always high on the steep climbs. Unfortunately, I had a mechanical with 35 kilometres to go and after a long solo chase made it back to the bunch with ten kilometres left. In the end I could sprint to 16th but the main thing is we didn’t lose anything on GC looking towards the weekend.”

28th May – Stage 1: Charvieu-Chavagnieux – Charvieu-Chavagnieux

The opening day of Alpes Isère Tour saw the peloton take on a hilly and rolling parcours, with a flatter final ten kilometres. It was a big battle from the start as multiple teams looked to make the breakaway. Eventually after over an hour of racing a group of seven snapped the elastic; with Jacob Bush and Matteo Vanhuffel making the group to represent Team Picnic PostNL’s Development program.

From there, the action was on for the rest of the day and the break had to stay on the pedals so to speak throughout the afternoon. At one point it looked like they might be caught when the gap reduced to under 20 seconds, but the pace went out in the chase and those ahead continued to work well. Coming into the final, the stage was decided in a sprint from the break with Vanhuffel leading the team home in fifth place.

Team Picnic PostNL coach Joey van Rhee said: “We had the goal of racing aggressively today and not to miss the breakaway today. We did that in a really good way with the guys. In the first hour of racing the peloton covered 50 kilometres, so the pace was high and there was a lot of jumping but we stayed sharp and rotated every time in the front. In the end we had Jacob and Matteo in a break of seven for us. They needed to ride the whole day out front and at one point we thought it might be over with the gap at 15 seconds, but then it increased again. We maybe could have done the final a bit differently but that’s also the nice thing for these young guys to learn how to ride these kind of finals. I’m very proud of the guys, how we rode today, and we’re in the race so I’m looking forward to the next days.”
