One-day racing continued this weekend following on from Saturday’s Heistse Pijl action, with a day out at Brussels Cycling Classic. It’s a race that often ends in a bunch sprint finish, but recent editions have shown that things can get more selective if the weather is more challenging and teams attack the cobbles and climbs.
Team Picnic PostNL set out with the goal of coming into the finale with Frits Biesterbos as their sprint finisher, but to also be alert to any dangerous moves in the pre-final. However, it remained quite a controlled race with the size of the peloton slowly whittling down as they took on the day’s difficulties. Coming into the final the squad still had four guys in the front group, and they worked well together to bring Biesterbos into position around the last corners, delivering a strong lead-out. Biesterbos bided his time and produced a strong kick, weaving his way past several riders to take a good fourth place come the finish line.
