Tour des Alpes Maritimes
Sunday’s race saw almost 3000 metres of climbing spread throughout the route and with constantly rolling terrain; it made for a hard day of action. Team Picnic PostNL began the day with confidence after a good showing on Saturday at Classic Var, and multiple potential options for the tougher terrain. Coming into the final 40 kilometres the whole team was together, having traversed the earlier climbs, but unfortunately on a descent Warren Barguil crashed and abandoned the race. The team rallied around each other though and when things split on the last main ascent of the day Frank van den Broek and Bjorn Koerdt made it into a group of 13 chasers behind the two leaders. The Team Picnic PostNL duo worked hard and tried to close the gap to those ahead, but on the last two kilometre climb to the line they had to let go of the wheels; with Van den Broek leading the team home in 11th place on the day.
