Team Picnic PostNL took on the demanding GP Miguel Indurain, covering 204 kilometres and 3200 metres of elevation in northern Spain. Early in the race, five riders formed the day’s breakaway, which was later joined by eight counter attackers as the race became more aggressive over the rolling terrain. The pace remained high throughout, and by 40 kilometres to go, what remained of the peloton regrouped, with the Team Picnic PostNL riders positioned together in the bunch.
Soon after, a new front group of 12 riders formed as attacks continued in the finale. With 12 kilometres remaining, Quinn Simmons and Ion Izagirre went clear, before Markel Beloki bridged across as they approached the final short but steep climb. On that decisive ascent, Izagirre launched the winning move, going clear to claim victory. Behind, the race split into small chasing groups, with Development rider Matteo Vanhuffel leading the team across the line after a hard and selective day in the Basque hills.
