The final Monument of the season saw Team Picnic PostNL line-up for Il Lombardia on Saturday, with over 4000 metres of climbing spread throughout the 241 kilometres of racing. It was a fast start to the day and after initially missing the break, Bjorn Koerdt jumped strongly from the peloton and dragged a second group clear, forming a large break of around 14 riders out front.
Unfortunately their gap was only ever able to reach a maximum of three minutes and as the group thinned down out front, Koerdt hung in there as they made their way onto the penultimate main climb of the day. There he had to let go of the wheels and returned to the peloton where the rest of the team had looked to position Oscar Onley, with Chris Hamilton and Kevin Vermaerke sticking with the young Scot until the last main climb. The expected race winning move was made by Pogacar, while Onley battled in one of the chasing groups behind, ultimately finishing in 17th place on the day.
