Itzulia Basque Country – Race Report

Itzulia Basque Country

11th April – Stage 5: Urduña – Gernika-Lumo

Hard racing at Itzulia Basque Country continued on Friday for the fifth day of action. With a rolling parcours, it looked like a potentially good day for the breakaway so as a result it was a fast and aggressive start. Team Picnic PostNL rode well and infiltrated the move of six with Warren Barguil. However, with only five teams represented, those that missed the move kept the group close and the gap never really extended further than three minutes. With around 40 kilometres to go Healy launched from the break, on what would ultimately be a stage winning move. Barguil and the remnants of the break were caught, so the team fully focused on positioning Oscar Onley ahead of the last steep climb. Coming over the top of it in the reduced yellow jersey group, Onley stayed in that group until the line where he finished the day in 13th place; and holding onto a spot just outside the top ten on GC ahead of the final stage.

Onley said: “Warren made it in a really strong break today but unfortunately the peloton was aware of their strength and rode hard all day. Gijs did a really good job guiding me throughout the stage and positioning me into the final climb. I rode within myself aware that it would be difficult to make a difference today. I’m keen to go for it tomorrow and try and make something from the week.”

10th April – Stage 4: Beasain – Markina-Xemein

Like the previous stages, the fourth day of racing at Itzulia saw a fierce battle at the start to form the day’s breakaway. Several moves went and were brought back before eventually a strong group of 11 went clear. Team Picnic PostNL focused on saving their energy in the bunch and looking after GC finisher Oscar Onley. Heading towards the last brutally steep climb of the day the break was caught, and the team positioned Onley near the front of the bunch as they made the turn. Immediately met by challenging gradients, it was a grind all the way to the top with Onley cresting the ascent in an elite chase group behind lone leader and eventual stage winner Almeida. The chase group came to the line together to battle it out for the remaining stage podium places, with Onley taking eighth on the day and moving up on GC.

Onley reflected: “It was another hard day with a big fight for the break. The guys went deep to make sure they stayed with me throughout the day which was nice to see. On the final climb I rode within myself and always felt in control. It’s nice to see the improvements from each race day so far and gives me confidence towards Saturday.”

9th April – Stage 3: Zarautz – Beasain

Racing was on from the flag drop at Itzulia with a fierce pace from the flag drop. Despite multiple attempts, no real breakaway was able to form at the front and it became a race of attrition in the opening part of the day. When TV coverage began at 70 kilometres to go, Oscar Onley and Warren Barguil represented Team Picnic PostNL in a reduced peloton of around 35 riders. From there, the day remained fast with Barguil covering a dangerous move ahead of the last climb. On the steep gradients of the final ascent Onley rode strongly but just had to let go of the wheels of the leading group towards the top. Finding himself in a chase group, he led the team home one the day with Barguil following in a group not far behind.

Onley expressed: “It was a typical Basque stage today – it was full gas all day. Warren was really good with me today, staying with me and covering moves towards the final climb. I felt ok there but blew up on the final bit and got dropped unfortunately just towards the top. I’m hoping to ride into the race a bit more in the coming days.”

8th April – Stage 2: Pamplona-Iruña – Lodosa

After Monday’s opening time trial, the sprinters had an opportunity to go for a result on Tuesday’s rolling, but flat-for-Itzulia route. Team Picnic PostNL’s main objective of the day was to get GC finisher Oscar Onley through the stage safely and in a good way. Riding well as a group the team did just that and while the sprinters battled it out for stage honours; the team came across the line surrounding Onley.

Team Picnic PostNL coach Phil West said: “As it was an expected sprint stage and without a designated fast finisher here, our goal of the day was to get our GC-finisher Oscar through the day safely and without any time loss. The guys did a good job with that throughout the day, bubbled up well, and looked after each other with fuelling and nutrition. We managed to avoid the crash and chaos in the final, and came home safely in the peloton. We’ll look to the upcoming days over the hills where we’ll find terrain more suited to our liking.”

7th April – Stage 1: Vitoria-Gasteiz – Baskonia-Alavés (ITT)

For the second year in a row, Itzulia Basque Country got underway with an individual time trial. While last year’s opener featured a punchy, undulating profile, this year the organisers served up a flatter, 16.5-kilometre test—welcome news for the time trial specialists, less so for the pure climbers. For the lighter riders, it was all about limiting the damage.

The route northeast of Vitoria-Gasteiz offered few technical challenges, but demanded a steady, all-out effort on the exposed roads through the Basque plains. For Team Picnic PostNL, Oscar Onley posted the fastest time of the day, stopping the clock at 19:34. That time placed him 41st on the stage, but crucially, just under a minute behind stage winner Maximilian Schachmann—keeping him well in contention ahead of the climbing-heavy stages to come. The rest of the team finished safely, with eyes now turning to tomorrow’s second stage and the first test over the hills.

Team Picnic PostNL coach Phil West said: “The goal today was for Oscar to deliver a solid time trial and position himself well for the GC. I think he did a relatively good job—he lost some time to a few GC contenders, but now we have a clear picture of where we stand and what we need to work on. It’s a solid start, and we’re looking to build on that in the days ahead.”
