Liège – Bastogne – Liège – Race Report

Liège - Bastogne - Liège

27th April: Liège – Bastogne – Liège

The fourth Monument of the season lay ahead of Team Picnic PostNL and the rest of the peloton on Sunday afternoon; with 257 kilometres on the menu. The team set out with the goal of protecting and keeping finishers Romain Bardet and Oscar Onley safe before the race was expected to explode in the finale.

Coming into the last 60 kilometres Warren Barguil and Chris Hamilton were with the duo, but an unfortunate crash on the ascent of the Col du Rosier saw Barguil have to step off the bike. Hamilton then brought Bardet and Onley into the foot of the Côte de la Redoute, where Pogacar made his race-winning attack. Onley fought through the mass of riders going backwards to crest the top in around 15th position, but unfortunately an incredibly ill-time puncture saw Bardet distanced.

Onley fought as hard as he could over the remainder of the race, initially trying to force another group clear in pursuit of those out front, but when things came together with a larger peloton, he held position. Waiting for the sprint in the final for the places just off the podium, Onley did the best he could to navigate the chaos and sprinted to a solid 12th place on the day.

Onley expressed: “It was a simple plan today protecting myself and Romain into the final 40 kilometres of the race. I felt pretty good throughout the day and the guys did a good job with positioning us before Redoute. It was a difficult final after that with a lot of teams having multiple guys, but I gambled on it staying together for a sprint. I tried to position myself as well as I could in the finale and did my best. I’m satisfied with this result after a disappointing day on Wednesday and looking forward to Romandie on Tuesday.”

Bardet added: “The team did well today positioning Oscar and I for the final part of the race. Then on La Redoute I got a puncture and there isn’t really a worse place or moment for that to happen. Of course, you can’t always be lucky in this race and it was a big contrast to last year but the the shape was good and I’m looking forwards to the Giro now.”
