Milano-Sanremo – Race Report

Milano-Sanremo

22nd March – Milan-Sanremo Men: Milano – Sanremo

The first Monument of the year saw the peloton leave Milan under rainy conditions but after the Turchino and when they hit the coast, things cleared up. With a break of seven up the road, Team Picnic PostNL remained in the bunch and focused on making it over the three capi in position and onto the Cipressa. However, a crash within the peloton right at the bottom of the ascent when the road narrowed saw the team unfortunately caught up. With the pace fully-on at the front from that point onwards, the team tried to come back to the reduced main peloton, but it was to no avail.

Team Picnic PostNL coach Phil West said: “We’re a bit disappointed with today. We started off with good intentions and a good plan. We managed it really well in the bad weather at the start and came over Turchino in a good way. However, in certain moments we stopped communicating and doing our own thing a bit too much though, and found ourselves struggling to find our way into the final together as a team and we were too far back going into Cipressa. It gives us some clear things to work on in our next races though and when we pull that together then I think we can have an upside to it.”
