Moving forward with the latest technologies as we pursue net zero
Sustainability is an important value for our title partners dsm-firmenich and PostNL. Thanks to the encouragement and support of dsm-firmenich and PostNL, Shell will deploy their expertise and technology to help us move towards becoming a net-zero operation. As part of a greener world and to run a highly modern operation we are working on several projects together with Shell.
In 2024 we proudly announced that 90 percent of our in-race vehicles for coaches have been fully electric since the beginning of 2024. The journey of electrification of Team Picnic PostNL’s fleet began in 2023, where at the Tour de Suisse and Criterium du Dauphine, the team used Shell’s advanced telemetry devices to gather critical data that underscored the feasibility and advantages of using electric Volvo cars in high-performance scenarios. These tests showed it was possible to compete at the Tour de France with an electric vehicle, and in the 2023 edition of the race saw our first race car complete the race on electric power alone, proving the technology’s potential and reliability. With the Shell Recharge app and card, it is always easy for our staff to find and use public charging points.
For our larger vehicles we’re working with renewable diesel. Shell Renewable Diesel is an alternative to the current diesel that we use. With Shell Renewable Diesel we can reduce our CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent compared to regular diesel. Over time this will become the new standard in the team’s trucks, buses and campers, until electrification or hydrogen becomes a feasible zero-emission alternative there too.
