Despite the rolling terrain on the parcours, a bunch sprint was expected at the Münsterland Giro, with many teams bringing their top sprinters to the start. For Team Picnic PostNL, Frits Biesterbos was the designated finisher after showing strong form in recent weeks. A six-rider breakaway spent much of the day up the road, while the peloton kept the escapees under control. Team Picnic PostNL stayed well positioned throughout the race, making sure Biesterbos was in a good position for the expected sprint. With five kilometres to go, the breakaway was brought back and the fight for position began.
The team did a strong job bringing Biesterbos towards the front in the hectic finale. From there, he picked out a few good wheels and continued to move up before launching his sprint. Giving everything to the line, Biesterbos managed to pass several riders in the final metres to secure third place and a well-deserved podium for the team.
After the race, Biesterbos reflected: “Things went really well today. Everyone was active from the start and the fight for the early breakaway took a little longer, which meant our whole team was well positioned at the front throughout the race. When we reached the hilly section, a few teams started attacking, but we were always right there and never really lost control. We were able to follow all the important moves. Once we got closer to Münster, everything came back together and the whole team did a really good job keeping me near the front during the chaotic local laps. Nils and Timo in particular did a fantastic job there. It was really great teamwork today and I’m obviously very happy with third place. It feels like my best result so far, so that’s really cool. It was a difficult sprint, but I can look back on the race with a very satisfied feeling.”
