A brand new UCI level race awaited the Women’s peloton on Sunday, as they took on 20 laps of a four and a half kilometre long circuit around Adelaide. Due to the nature of the course it was a fast day out with a high pace set during the afternoon. Early on Team Picnic PostNL covered the opening attacks, before taking over the onus in the peloton to close down a strong break that formed; with the goal of setting up fast finisher Rachele Barbieri for the sprint.
Ahead of the last lap the pace ramped up one notch further and Dygert put in a strong attack but Barbieri latched quickly onto here back wheel and followed. The duo got a gap that reached a maximum of five seconds but the peloton shut them down and things came back together for a fast finish. The team brought Barbieri forward but it was an intense fight into the last corner for position. Launching a strong sprint, despite following the earlier move, Barbieri came past several riders to take a strong third place on the day; a good result after a strong team performance.
