Renewi Tour – Race Report

Renewi Tour

23rd August – Stage 4: Riemst – Bilzen-Hoeselt

The penultimate day of racing at the Renewi Tour saw the peloton take on the longest stage of the race, with a rolling 198 kilometre long parcours; but it was nonetheless a stage expected to end in a sprint. It was a fast start and a strong breakaway eventually went clear, with all Team Picnic PostNL riders in the peloton – looking to preserve energy and set up Pavel Bittner for a fast finish come the end of the day.

Due to the strength of the break and the gap that they got, it forced a hard chase in teh finale by the peloton where Team Picnic PostNL did their fare share of the work. Coming into the final five kilometres those ahead were caught and the sprint was set up. It was once again a chaotic finale but the team stayed calm, with Nils Eekhoff bringing Bittner into a position where he could launch his sprint. Kicking in sight of the line, Bittner gave it his all to take a strong second place on the day.

Bittner expressed: “We knew today would be a bit easier than yesterday, but it was still quite hectic. The breakaway was strong that took quite a lot of time so the last 20 kilometres were really fast but we were ready for it. As it was an easier day then the final was quite messy but we tried to navigate through it. I felt pretty good for the sprint and we came out on the right side and I could open up my effort. I lost a little bit of speed before I started but again Merlier was really strong and got the better of me. I’m happy with second place and moving up into fifth on GC before the last day. I think tomorrow it will really explode but hopefully we will be ready for it, and we’ll battle to try and keep that GC position. All the guys and me are excited for it.”

22nd August – Stage 3: Aalter – Geraardsbergen

Stage 3 of the Renewi Tour was a true classics-style day, with short, famous climbs and constant attacks throughout the day. After 20 kilometres, an 11-man break went clear, with Team Picnic PostNL sticking together in the peloton. Approaching the final finishing circuit which included the Muur van Geraardsbergen and the Bosberg, attacks flew, but the peloton came back together as the they took on the Muur for the first time.  The race stayed aggressive, with a group of favourites bridging to the early break on the descent and a later flurry of attacks producing a leading trio of Van der Poel, De Lie and Wellens. The trio managed to stay away, with Van der Poel taking the win. Not far behind, Pavel Bittner managed to finish 9th on a hard day of racing. This result means he goes into green jersey for leader of the sprint classification.

After the stage, Pavel said: “Today we started the stage with the goal of putting Nils and myself in a good position for the final, and then just racing to see where we stood after the first four climbs. We were there when the race kicked off, and I felt pretty good, so I tried to ride a calculated race — not overdo it, but stay in position. On the Muur van Geraardsbergen the race exploded, and a group went clear ahead of us. In the last lap we chased together with Sean and Frank, who did a really good job. In the end I sprinted from my group to get the best possible result, and I think a top 10 is really nice. Being 8th in GC as well, just a few seconds behind the riders in front, gives us confidence for the next days.”

21st August – Stage 2: Blankenberge – Ardooie

Returning to Belgian soil, the Renewi Tour once again saw another stage fret with crosswind danger as the peloton made its way towards Ardooie and the traditional finish circuit there. Team Picnic PostNL were always alert to the danger and well represented in any potential echelon that formed at the head of the race once the early break was reeled in. Ultimately though a reduced peloton of around 80 riders came into the finale for a sprint to the line.

On the narrow and twisting roads Sean Flynn brought forward Nils Eekhoff and Pavel Bittner, with Eekhoff then taking over and guiding Bittner in the final few kilometres. As always on the finish into Ardooie it was hectic and nervous, with the proverbial washing-machine effect on full display. As the pace lulled Eekhoff managed to make his way to the front and stretch things out, while Bittner squeezed through a gap behind him. That increase in pace meant Bittner could launch his sprint into clean air in sight of the line, ultimately going on to take a strong second place on the stage in a fair sprint against Kooij.

Bittner reflected: “Today we went into the stage with the same idea and plan as yesterday, but the wind was much stronger. That made it more nervous so we had to be sharp from the start to the finish, but the boys did a good job there. On the local lap it split once and we had Nils in front, so we could take it a bit easier as other teams were forced to bring it back. Coming into the final it was really chaotic but Nils and I did a good job with moving up. I was in a really good place to open up the sprint from the back with some speed, and again the winner came out of my wheel. For sure I wanted to win today but I think in the end we did a really nice job as a team, and are in a good way as a team coming into the hard stages.”

20th August – Stage 1: Terneuzen – Breskens

The Renewi Tour got underway with the only stage that takes place in the Netherlands this week, as the peloton were faced with a flat 182 kilometre route from Terneuzen to Breskens. With the threat of wind and potential crosswinds throughout the day, it made for a fast stage. The original break was caught and a 16 rider group, that featured Team Picnic PostNL’s Frank van den Broek, went clear with over 90 kilometres to race. Their advantage was only ever allowed to reach 45 seconds at most and they were brought back with around five kilometres to go.

From there, the team looked to set-up the sprint with finisher Pavel Bittner. A strong lead-out from the team, and in particular last-man Nils Eekhoff, saw the squad navigate the chaos of the closing kilometres, with Eekhoff dropping Bittner off with around 200 metres to go. From there, Bittner could launch his sprint into clean air and eventually crossed the line in a strong fourth place – and something to build on for the coming days.

Bittner expressed: “We went into today knowing that it would be a stressful day with the wind. In the final we wanted to go for a sprint with me but in keep in mind the GC with Nils, and I think we did a pretty good job. At one point it really started racing in teh bunch and a group of 16 went with Frank in there for us which made it a lot safer and better for us. We were then gliding around the front to make sure that nothing happened or went without us. Coming into the final I found my good legs from the Tour, and I was feeling really good. Alex and then Nils did a really good job, and Nils basically placed me on 230 metres to go. I was second wheel and felt confident so I launched, but I had some strong guys on my wheel and they went around so in the end it was a fourth place. On one hand I really wanted to win today but it’s a good sign for the rest of the week and tomorrow we have another chance to go for it, so I think it was a nice day to kick off the racing here.”
