Setmana Ciclista Women – Race Report

Setmana Ciclista Women

15th February – Stage 3: Sagunt – València

The third stage of the Setmana Ciclista offered the riders a parcours similar to that of the previous day. After a steady start, newly crowned Colombian champion Juliana Londoño bridged across to a lone attacker, whom she soon dropped on the only climb of the day. Meanwhile, the pace in the peloton picked up, and attacks came in quick succession, leading to Londoño being caught just before the summit. On the descent, three riders managed to break away. In the reduced peloton, Team Picnic PostNL was well represented with four riders. As the sprint trains formed, the breakaway was reeled in, setting up a fast finish in Valencia. Balsamo powered to the win, while Eleonora Ciabocco was the first finisher for Team Picnic PostNL.

After the finish Londoño reflected on the stage: “I consider today a positive day. I woke up feeling a bit tired, and when coach Callum (Ferguson) told me to try to get in the break, I honestly thought I wouldn’t be able to do it. At the start, it was really tough, but on the second attempt that I finally managed to get a gap. While in the breakaway, I just focused on reaching the top of the climb. The main group caught me with just a kilometer to go to the top, but I managed to stay with them on the descent for the final. I’m happy that I gave it a try.”

14th February – Stage 2: Benicàssim – Nules

The second stage of the Setmana Ciclista seemed to offer an opportunity for the sprinters, though they first had to survive two longer climbs in the middle of the stage. On the final uphill sections of the day, multiple attacks were launched in the peloton, but a large group came back together, including several riders from Team Picnic PostNL. The last breakaway rider was caught with 4 kilometers to go, signaling the real start of the sprint preparations. In the sprint, Eleonora Ciabocco, who started the day in the white jersey as the leader of the youth classification, showed her fast legs. The Italian crossed the line in seventh place and remains in the white jersey.

After the stage Ciabocco said: “Today, the start was quite hard. Ella, Becky, and Elise tried to get into the breakaway, but not much happened. Then I had a crash, and Becky waited for me. It came at a difficult moment, so that was really helpful in getting me back to the peloton. On the climbs, it was all about energy management. Francesca, Marta, and I were in the first group, where I tried my chance in the sprint. They helped me with positioning, especially Francesca. I’m happy with my top-10, and we’re ready for tomorrow.”

13th February – Stage 1: Alzira – Gandia

The opening stage of the Setmana Ciclista Volta Femenina de la Comunitat Valenciana, or simply Setmana Ciclista, featured a rolling course that offered opportunities for different types of riders. Team Picnic PostNL positioned itself smartly in the bunch during the early phase of the race. On the penultimate climb and the fast descent that followed, the pace ramped up, and from there, the race never slowed down. In the end, it was Demi Vollering who went solo on the final climb to take the stage win. Eleonora Ciabocco dug deep on the climbs to stay in the reduced peloton and crossed the line in 8th place and claimed the first white jersey as the leader of the young rider classification.

Francesca Barale analyzed the stage after the finish: “I think overall it was a good day, not much happened really. It was all about the last climb, and everyone was waiting for it, also because for a lot of people it was the first race of the season. We tried to stay together. It was a nice first race with a mixed group, so we had to get used to that a bit. We tried to position ourselves for the last climb, and then me and Eleonora tried to survive. She managed to stay in the second group and get a nice top-10 finish. I think it’s a good start, and we can build from that. We can still look for opportunities later in this race.”
