Strade Bianche – Race Report

Strade Bianche

8th March – Strade Bianche Donne: Siena – Siena

The battle over the dust roads saw a hard day out for Team Picnic PostNL. It was a steady start to the race which became one of attrition over the course of the afternoon. Mara Roldan and Nienke Vinke were both involved in crashes which ultimately saw them leave the race. In the peloton the team worked well together but as the fight for position intensified ahead of the long gravel sections in the middle of the race; the team were forced further back in the group. Unfortunately, things then split completely on those sectors and a group of around 30 riders went clear where the winner of the day would ultimately come from; while Marta Cavalli led the team home.

Team Picnic PostNL coach Callum Ferguson expressed: “It was a hard day. We had a few crashes earlier in the race with Mara and Nienke. Mara stopped and Nienke tried to come back to the front but then couldn’t, so she stepped off too. When we were approaching the crucial gravel sectors we weren’t good enough as a group, so weren’t in position or at the front together. The race then split on one of the long sections and from that time we were always trying to play catch up and behind the facts, but by then the race was done for us.”
