Hailing from Leeds in the United Kingdom, Bjoern got into the sport from a young age after his dad started cycling. Initially his dad wanted to get his two older sisters into cycling but neither of them were too interested and Bjoern “liked the look of it” so he gave it a go at around the age of four.
“We even had to saw down the frame so I could fit on the bike basically. I really liked it and then started racing at the age of around five or six.”
Like most kids in the United Kingdom, Bjoern tried his hand at a lot of other sports such as football, running, cross country, boxing and rugby to name a few, but nothing was as serious as his approach to cycling.
A competitive person at heart, he loves the thrill of racing and the adrenaline that comes with it but equally he enjoys the feeling of freedom while out on the road and using cycling as a way to socialise with friends. Not someone who looks at his data too much post-ride, Bjoern jokes that his competitiveness sometimes gets the better of him when out for a ride.
“Sometimes when someone flies past you on an e-bike and you’re just like, whoah, I’m going to catch them and attack over the top.”
Having made his way through the junior ranks where he combined a lot of mountain bike and cyclocross, Bjoern spent his first two years as an U23 riding for French team CC Étupes. Learning the ropes of road racing with them, he’s thankful for his time spent there and not only for the experience he gained on the road, but also some important life skills too; living away from home and everything that comes with it.
Mid-2024 then saw Bjoern join Team dsm-firmenich PostNL as a stagiaire where he impressed not only on the bike with his ability over a variety of terrain, but the talkative and outgoing Brit fitted in seamlessly to the team’s approach; where he was always willing to give his all and learn from those around him.
Already knowing a few familiar faces in the team, Bjoern grew up racing on the same cyclocross team as Oliver [Peace] who came from a town nearby him, with the duo regularly “riding around the Yorkshire Dales together.”
Describing himself as “open”, “talkative” and “driven”, Bjoern thinks that he will bring some good vibes to the team and keep everyone upbeat on the bus or at camp. He has a “relaxed” attitude at times, however, that’s his way of channelling his energy into his goals.
“I’m a competitive person and if I set my mind on something then I really go for it. I might seem a bit more relaxed about it, but I’m fully focused on the job at hand.”
With an interesting international name for a young guy from Yorkshire, you might be wondering where it comes from…his dad is half-Swedish and half-German. It’s no surprise then that the talkative and personable Bjoern also can talk in multiple languages too as he takes after his father, being able to speak and understand German to a good level.
