From the harbour city of Newcastle in the state of New South Wales, it’s no surprise that like most Australians Lucie was an active kid who did as many sports as she could, from athletics to surf lifesaving. Lucie’s cycling journey began at around the age of 11 when her twin brother started on the track and she wanted to give it a try too.
“I basically followed him to training, gave it a try and loved it. Then I started riding road more and in 2020 stopped track completely.”
From that time, it’s been quite a quick progression for Lucie who has taken steps year-on-year, from a club team in Australia to the Continental level to then a Pro team and for 2026 the WorldTour with Team Picnic PostNL.
Alongside making her way through the ranks of the cycling world, the studious Lucie has also been in the process of completing a civil engineering degree which she started part-time in 2019; with the proverbial finish line of that in sight. Something that she will be “very proud” of completing.
Someone that is very goal-orientated, Lucie says that she “isn’t a numbers person at all” and instead focuses on the next steps for what she can do and tick off as her source of motivation.
“Winning isn’t just crossing the line first; it’s can I actually do my job properly? There are always things that you can improve on. Once you tick things off, the goal posts move and then you have to set yourself a new goal – that’s what keeps me going.”
Describing herself as “stubborn”, “persistent” and “flexible”, those personality characteristics have definitely helped Lucie navigate her way to the top of the sport.
“When I’ve made my mind up on something I normally stick to it until its done, but if I have to make adaptions to achieve that goal then that’s the route I will go down. I think it was instilled in me from a young age to just chip away at things, and if you do that then nothing ever seems too hard when you get there, it’s just like ‘what’s next?’ kind of thing.”
Now fulfilling her dream of reaching the WorldTour it is no surprise that Lucie hasn’t taken her foot off the gas, and she continues to set new goals and ambitions for herself in the coming years.
“I want to make the most out of the team and its expertise; whether that’s the staff or my teammates. I want to be someone who’s a lot more professional, a lot more skilled and a lot more experienced.”
Away from the bike, the talkative and easy-going Lucie will no doubt easily find her feet at the team’s base at the Keep Challenging Center where she will spend part of her season. In fact, one of her hidden talents is that she’s exceptionally good at braiding hair, so we know who the rest of the squad will be calling on for their pre-ride hair routines!
