Tirreno-Adriatico

Stage 6: San Severino Marche -> Camerino

The penultimate day of racing in Italy saw the GC riders come to the fore over a demanding parcours with a lot of climbing metres throughout the afternoon. Team Picnic PostNL tried to infiltrate the early breakaway but a seven rider move went clear withouth the squad, and from there it was a case of battling to stay in the GC group for as long as possible, before making their way to the finish. First-year pro, Oliver Peace, impressed by being the last from the team in the reduced front group over the climbs.

Stage 5: Marotta-Mondolfo -> Mombaroccio

It was a demanding day of racing on stage 5 of the Tirreno–Adriatico, as the peloton tackled 184 kilometres from Marotta-Mondolfo to Mombaroccio with almost 4000 metres of elevation. An eight-rider breakaway went clear early in the stage. Sean Flynn was initially part of this break, but was struck by a mechanical early in the stage. At the end of the day, it was the break that would ultimately fight for the win, with Michael Valgren emerging victorious from the move. Behind, the GC contenders turned up the pace on the relentless climbs, making it a hard and selective day in the saddle. Battling through the tough terrain and repeated ascents, it was Mattia Gaffuri who led Team Picnic PostNL across the line after another challenging day in the Italian stage race.

Stage 4: Tagliacozzo -> Martinsicuro

Another 200 kilometre stage awaited the peloton on Thursday afternoon, where they would be met with over 2500 metres of climbing throughout the stage. Potentially a good day for the breakaway, it was a fast and frantic start, with Mattia Gaffuri managing to make the 12-rider move for Team Picnic PostNL. They managed to build up an advantage that peaked at roughly three minutes, but the peloton were keen to bring them back and set up a strong chase throughout the afternoon. Coming into the closing 40 kilometres, Gaffuri attacked himself and followed several other moves, but it was ultimately in vain with the peloton making the catch on the last steep climb, where a group of 15 riders went clear to fight for the stage win.

Stage 3: Cortona -> Magliano de’ Marsi

A rainy day out in Italy saw the peloton take on a deceptively hilly stage with roughly 2500 metres of climbing throughout the 221 kilometre route, but it was a stage that on paper looked set to be an uphill bunch sprint. With that in mind, one lone rider forged on at the head of the race for the first 150 kilometres, but they returned to the peloton at 70 kilometres to go. Team Picnic PostNL worked as a group to keep each other safe and then position Pavel Bittner for the final gallop to the line, with John Degenkolb dropping Bittner off in a good wheel at 500 metres to go. Unfortunately, just as the sprint was opening up Bittner got squeezed between two riders and couldn’t fully go for it in the finale, ultimately crossing the line in tenth place.

Stage 2: Camaiore – San Gimignano

Team Picnic PostNL were back in action on stage 2 of the Tirreno–Adriatico with a long 206-kilometre route from Camaiore to San Gimignano. The day concluded with a gravel sector in the finale, which together with rainy conditions made for a tricky run-in to the finish. As the race approached the decisive sector, the wet roads and gravel ramps caused splits in the peloton, with riders battling both the terrain and the conditions. In the end, everyone made it through the demanding finale safely while gaining valuable experience on the sterrato roads.

Stage 1: Lido di Camaiore – Lido di Camaiore

Team Picnic PostNL got their week of racing underway at the Tirreno–Adriatico on Monday with the traditional opening individual time trial in Lido di Camaiore. The flat and fast 11.5-kilometre course provided a straightforward but high-speed test against the clock to kick off the Italian stage race. Riding steady efforts along the seafront roads, it was Julius van den Berg who set the fastest time of the day for the team. Most importantly, everyone got through the stage in a good way, preparing for the racing to follow in the coming days.
