31st July – Stage 6: Clermont-Ferrand – Ambert

After some shorter climbs in previous stages, the sixth day of racing at the Tour de France Femmes saw the peloton take on some longer ascents ahead of the finish to Ambert. Once again it was an attacking start with a lot of riders looking to try and make the day’s breakaway. Team Picnic PostNL were particularly active and eventually Pfeiffer Georgi made it into a group of 20 that broke clear.

The group’s advantage maxed out at around one minute and 30 seconds, but the peloton began to set tempo and slowly reeled them in as they headed towards the climbing-filled final 70 kilometres. Georgi climbed well as her breakaway thinned down to around 12 riders as they climbed the Col du Béal which averaged five and a half percent for just over ten kilometres. As the peloton continued to up the pace, so did the break and ultimately Georgi had to let go of the wheels out front. Returning to the peloton, Georgi joined Francesca Barale with the duo supporting Nienke Vinke for as long as possible.

Over the top of the climb and down the descent the peloton strung out and gaps appeared. Vinke found herself with the white jersey Bego and tried to bridge back to the yellow jersey group on the next ascent, but just as they were about to make the junction the gap increased once more. Vinke then stayed with her group all the way to the line and currently sits second in the best young rider classification ahead of the final three stages.

Team Picnic PostNL coach Albert Timmer: “Today we wanted to try and be in the break once again, with the idea of getting a few riders over the climbs so that we could support Nienke in the finale. The team was sharp and we covered a lot of attacks and Pfeiffer made it into the big group that went. Unfortunately, they never got too much time and onto the big climb of the day the peloton had almost caught them. The team then helped Nienke as best as they could, but the peloton then split on the descent and we never made it back to the head of the race. Nonetheless, Nienke was able to follow in the white jersey group so we didn’t lose anytime there which was good. We will see what we can do in the mountains over the next days.”

30th July – Stage 5: Chasseneuil-du-Poitou – Guéret

The longest stage of the week lay ahead of the peloton as they rolled out from the start zone this afternoon, with an almost 166 kilometre route. Starting off mostly flat, rolling hills and punchy ramps would make for a selective and tougher finale. A day that was potentially in the balance for what type of rider it suited, Team Picnic PostNL once again aimed to be aggressive and infiltrate the break. After several attempts by the squad it was Francesca Barale who made the move that ultimately snapped the elastic.

Barale’s group worked well together and built up an advantage north of four minutes and for a while there was a stand-off in the peloton for who would chase, but eventually some teams took up the onus and began to eat into the gap. Coming into the last 30 kilometres it was under one minute and on the climb of Côte de Peyroux, Barale’s break was caught. From there she turned her attention to helping position Megan Jastrab and Nienke Vinke for the final ascent, where the pace remained high.

In the end, it was the GC riders who fought it out for the stage win, with Vinke leading home the team on the stage; finishing in the second main chasing group.

After the stage Barale expressed: “We went in with the plan to be aggressive again today. We had Pfeiffer almost in a move, then Franzi was too, and at one point it stopped for a bit and I tried again. I was solo for a little while but then four other people bridged to me in waves. From there on it was along day as it was mostly flat. We got a decent gap but we knew it would come down as we came towards the climbs. I tried to hold on for as long as I could. When I was caught I really had to go full gas to get over the top of the climb, and then I tried to position Nienke and Megan as best as I could. Then on the last climb I had to drop. I think it was a good day though and it gives me some confidence for the rest of the race.”

29th July – Stage 4: Saumur – Poitiers

On paper, Tuesday’s day of racing at the Tour de France Femmes would be the flattest of the week with only 780 metres of elevation gain throughout the route, but with a few short rises, particularly in the finale, it wasn’t going to be an easy day. Team Picnic PostNL set out with a plan of trying to animate the race and upset the applecart, hoping that some other teams would follow and not ride for a simple sprint stage. From the start the team were in the action with multiple moves and riders trying to go clear.

Eventually, after two earlier attempts were brought in, Franziska Koch made it into the break of the day. Initially there were three riders out front, but that soon dropped to two and Koch pushed on valiantly with her breakaway companion Magalhães. They built up a gap of one minute and 30 seconds with over 70 kilometres to go, and it held steady for most of the afternoon. Coming into the final 20 kilometres there was a crash in the bunch in which Nienke Vinke was involved, but she was able to remount on her bike and return to the peloton. Ahead, Koch gave it her everything to try and deter the sprinters but was caught at roughly three kilometres to go.

The team then moved forward in what was a big fight for position in the finale, with Rachele Barbieri producing a powerful kick to the line to take seventh place on the stage. After her valiant efforts in the break, Koch was rewarded with a trip to the podium as the most combative rider of the day.

Speaking after the stage Koch said: “Our plan in the start of the day was to go for a break and shake things up; and if it came to a sprint then we had Rachele as our finisher. We had hoped for a big break of five or more riders, as we saw yesterday the break got four minutes and it was quite hard to bring them back in the end so we thought the chance could be good for a group to go all the way to the line. Out front me and Ana tried our best but in the end it was controlled from behind and we got caught. I was hoping for some more tailwind on the way to the finish but it was mostly crosswind and that didn’t really help!”

28th July – Stage 3: La Gacilly – Angers

27th July – stage 2: Brest – Quimper

Another short stage in Brittany, but this time the riders went beyond the 100-kilometer mark. The 110 km route from Brest started off relatively flat, but the terrain soon became more undulating after about 30 km — a clear sign of the challenging day ahead. The finish itself was on a grippy, uphill drag, a tough end to a demanding day in northern France.

Team Picnic PostNL, unfortunately racing without Charlotte Kool after her withdrawal, showed attacking intent right from the start. It was Megan Jastrab who launched the first move of the day, attempting to break clear in the early kilometres. When she was reeled back in, it was Franziska Koch — most combative rider of Stage 1 — who countered immediately. Together with Biannic, Koch spent a large part of the stage in the lead, but the duo was never given full freedom by the peloton.

With 60 kilometres to go, the breakaway was caught by a heavily reduced bunch, in which the rest of the Team Picnic PostNL riders were still grouped together and riding attentively. From there, the race exploded with a flurry of attacks. None of them stuck, until Mavi García launched a solo move with around 10 kilometres remaining. Her perfectly timed effort earned her the stage win, as she held off the chasing peloton all the way to the line in Quimper. After some strong teamwork to set up the final, the bunch splintered on the uphill drag to the finish. Nienke Vinke and Pfeiffer Georgi both crossed the line in the third group, 20 seconds behind García.

After the stage, Georgi reflected: “We wanted to try and get in the break today. Franzi was really strong and managed to get away, which was great. But the pace in the peloton never really dropped while they were up the road, so eventually they were caught. It was a really tough stage with lots of short, punchy climbs. When Chabbey and Smulders attacked for the first QOM, it became more about staying in position and waiting for moments in the final. But in the end, the pace was just too high to launch anything ourselves, so we had to focus on positioning. After two really hard days, I’m definitely looking forward to the slightly easier parcours tomorrow.”

26th July – stage 1: Vannes – Plumelec

The Tour de France Femmes kicked off with a short but punchy opening stage of 78.8 kilometres, featuring two classified climbs and a sting in the tail with a sharp uphill finish. A stage suited to various types of riders, it promised an unpredictable finale — and it delivered. Two riders formed the breakaway of the day, but their time out front ended well before the real action began. Team Picnic PostNL rode attentively in the bunch throughout the day, positioning themselves well for the business end of the stage. The action ramped up in the final 30 kilometres, with the team launching several aggressive moves.

At the intermediate sprint, Franziska Koch surged to second place and, spotting a gap behind her, pushed on solo. After being reeled back in, it was Francesca Barale’s turn to go on the offensive with an attack of her own. She too was caught by a determined peloton, but the team wasn’t done yet. With less than 10 kilometres to go, Koch launched another move in a bid to shake things up, though the bunch kept the German national champion on a short leash. In the end, it came down to a punchy uphill sprint, with Marianne Vos proving strongest. Pfeiffer Georgi was the first Picnic PostNL rider across the line, finishing in tenth place after a well-fought team effort. For her attacking spirit, Koch was awarded the day’s combativity prize.

After the stage, Koch reflected: “It was a pretty hectic day, with narrow roads that made it hard to move up early on. We were a bit boxed in at the start, but once things opened up on the left side, I found some space and was able to try a few attacks. None of them really stuck, but we gave it a good go — myself and also my teammates. I was hoping to get into the break, but sometimes it takes ten tries before the eleventh one finally works. I’ll keep trying, and the good thing is that we have plenty of options in this team. The vibe is really positive, and I think tomorrow will bring more of the same: narrow roads, short climbs, and lots of action. I’m looking forward to it — I think it’ll be another exciting day of racing.”
