Tour de Romandie – Race Report

Tour de Romandie

3rd March – Stage 4: Sion – Thyon 2000

The main mountain stage at the Tour de Romandie saw a whopping 4000 metres of climbing packed into a 118 kilometre route and a finish at altitude on Thyon 2000. It was a fast and aggressive start to the day before a break formed out front, while in the peloton Team Picnic PostNL grouped around GC finisher Oscar Onley; keeping him safe and protected going into the final.

Heading onto the climb of Thyon 2000 Onley had Pavel Bittner, Gijs Leemreize and Bjoern Koerdt alongside him in the reduced peloton, which diminished in size even further as the kilometres ticked by. With around ten kilometres to go the pace increased more dramatically and the already small peloton splintered into small groups. Onley had to let go of the wheels at the head of the race and ride his own tempo to the line; crossing the finish in 15th place.

Onley said: “The guys looked after me well and stayed with me for a long time today which was really nice. I also have to give a special mention to Pavel who impressively stayed with me and positioned us on the final climb. In the end, I didn’t have a good day and just had to ride my own pace on the final climb to limit the losses.”

2nd March – Stage 3: Cossonay – Cossonay

Helping to control from the off on stage three at the Tour de Romandie, Team Picnic PostNL eyed up the punchy finish climb where they would go for it with Oscar Onley. Strong riding by the whole team saw a dangerous break kept in check over challenging terrain and things were all together heading onto the last three kilometre kicker.

Onley entered the climb on a good wheel and was following ably on the early slopes but under the flamme rouge the pace slowed and Onley unfortunately slid down the order as others surged from either side. Pushing until the line, he produced a good turn of speed to take ninth on the stage – ahead of tomorrow’s big GC battle.

Onley said: “The guys worked really hard today to pull, and control a strong break. They put me in a perfect position into the final climb, but I slid a bit too far in the final 500 metres and couldn’t make that ground up again unfortunately. It’s a shame not to get a better result after all the work the boys did today.”

1st March – Stage 2: La Grande Béroche – La Grande Béroche

A tough day out with multiple climbs awaited the peloton in Romandie today, before a flatter run to the finish. The attitude with the bunch would dictate what type of stage we got, and from the start a hard pace was set with a strong break forming out front.

Pavel Bittner and other sprinters such as race leader Brennan returned to the peloton ahead of the last classified steep climb, but the pace really turned up a notch there. After being well positioned by the team, Oscar Onley followed the best really well and was third to crest the summit. However, on the flatter final 20 kilometres things became tactical with several stop-start attacks and eventually a group of five went clear. With a lack of cooperation in the chasing group those ahead fought for the stage, while Onley brought the team home in 11th place.

Onley said: “It was a pretty hard day today with the uphill start, we managed that well with Gijs and Bjoern before it re-grouped again. I just followed the top guys on the climb but really struggled with all the attacking in the valley and messed up a bit allowing that group away. It’s pretty frustrating but there’s still some nice opportunities coming up.”

30th April – Stage 1: Münchenstein – Fribourg

With Tuesday’s prologue behind them, open road racing returned at Tour de Romandie on Wednesday. Potentially a day for the sprinters, the fast-men in the peloton would need to traverse several hard climbs before a rolling finale. Team Picnic PostNL set out their stall with the joint goal of keeping GC finisher Oscar Onley safe and to go for it in the final with Pavel Bittner.

Controlling the strong breakaway that formed, the pace and heat was on all day and on the last main climb of the afternoon Bittner suffered a puncture and had to let go of the reducing peloton. However, the team worked brilliantly and closed back down a one minute gap to the peloton to return ahead of the finish. Yet, it was a chaotic run-in and on the uncategorised kickers in the closing three kilometres a few teams strung things out, which unfortunately made it difficult to move up. Onley was well to the fore and he followed the wheels well, and coming into the final with a view of the finish gantry he gave it his best kick and sprinted to as solid sixth place on the day.

Onley said: “We committed to the sprint for Pavel today and took control early on. Unfortunately, he punctured over the top of the steep climb and had a big chase back but it was a really big effort from the guys to get him back to the bunch. The team then did a good job positioning myself and Pavel for the final. With the fast descent it was a bit of a hectic run-in and I tried go for it in the sprint as well.”

29th April – Prologue: Saint-Imier – Saint-Imier

A fast 3.4 kilometre prologue around the streets of Saint-Imier got the Tour de Romandie underway on Tuesday afternoon. The technical route had several sharp corners and sections to put the power down on, plus a few short drags along the way. As a result, prologue specialists, sprinters and GC riders were all in the mix come the end of the day.

Team Picnic PostNL GC finisher Oscar Onley set a solid early benchmark but it would be fast-man Pavel Bittner who clocked the team’s best ride of the day. Cutting the timing beam with an effort of four minutes and 39 seconds, Bittner’s effort would ultimately be good enough for 12th place on the stage.

Bittner said: “I’m pretty happy with how things went today. I went into it to try my best today and sent it. In the end it was a quite decent result and a good opener for the next two or three days where there are some possible chances in the sprints. Oscar also really went for it too and did a solid ride in the GC, so overall it was a nice start and I’m excited for the next couple of days.”
