Tour de Suisse Women – Race Report

Tour de Suisse Women

13th June – Stage 2: Gstaad – Oberkirch

The second day of racing in Switzerland saw the peloton take on the longest stage of the week. With the big gaps from the opening stage, it was a fast start with a lot of attacks and eventually a group went clear. With all Team Picnic PostNL riders in the peloton, focus switched to being in a good position for the steep climb.

There, Eleonora Ciabocco put in a strong attack and managed to break free from the GC group. Continuing to push on the pedals over the top, down the descent and on the valley, she continued onto the last climb of the day. In the group behind the tempo increased and over the top the main GC favourites caught Ciabocco. Ahead, the break held on for the win while Ciabocco sprinted to ninth place; the same spot she now occupies in the GC battle, all while retaining the best young rider jersey.

Ciabocco said: “Today was a really long, hard and hot stage. The girls did a really good job to go to the car and take water and ice today for everyone as that was really important in the heat. After the first climb it was pretty flat, but it was hard because everyone tried to attack. Especially Nienke participated a lot for us but we just missed the breakaway. We then stuck together to be in a good position for later in the race, and the steep one. First Francesca then Nienke did a really good job to position me for that. I then found a good moment and tried to attack. We didn’t have anything to lose. It was pretty long until the last climb, but I managed to do it and the gap was enough to finish the climb where I was caught by Kasia. Then the GC riders caught us on the descent. I think we can be happy about today as a team because we raced well, and personally I had a good feeling on the bike.”

12th June – stage 1: Gstaad – Gstaad

Tour de Suisse Women kicked off on Thursday with a stage that could be divided into two parts. The first thirty kilometres featured two climbs, including the Jaunpass (8.0 km at 8.4%). After that, the route was mostly gently rolling until the finish.

On the first climb of the day, the Saanenmöser, the peloton stayed together. But on the Jaunpass, the bunch began to split. By the summit, only a small group remained at the front, while Team Picnic PostNL was well represented in the bigger chasing group with four riders: Francesca Barale, Marta Cavalli, Eleonora Ciabocco and Nienke Vinke.

The second part of the stage turned into a long chase behind the leading duo, Vollering and Reusser. Working well together, they stayed clear and sprinted for the win, with Reusser ultimately taking the stage. Barale, Ciabocco, and Vinke did everything they could to help close the gap to the leaders, aiming to limit Cavalli’s time loss in the general classification. The chasing group crossed the line two minutes and fourteen seconds later, with Ciabocco leading the team home, finishing 11th. That result puts her in the white jersey as the leader of the young rider classification. Cavalli finished in the same time, crossing the line in 16th place.

After the stage, Ciabocco said: “The stage was really hard from the start. The first climb didn’t make much of a difference, but the second one really did. Movistar set a high pace right from the bottom, and we just tried to follow. When Reusser attacked, the bunch completely exploded. Marta was well positioned near the front at that moment. After the descent, my group caught Marta again. We waited a bit for Nienke and Francesca, who were just behind us, and then the three of us started chasing. Eventually, I shifted my focus to the sprint. It’s a pity to already lose more than two minutes in the GC, but we did our best to come back with Marta. And with three stages to go, we’ll keep giving it everything.”
