Tour Down Under Women – Race Report

Tour Down Under

18th January – Stage 2: Unley – Willunga Hill

Stage 2 of the Tour Down Under featured the iconic Willunga Hill stage, and as expected, this is where the race truly came alive. The peloton caught the early break on the first ascent, after which the race exploded. A lead group broke away, with three Team Picnic PostNL riders not far behind. In the chase, Josie Nelson played a key role in bringing everything back together at the front. On the second and final climb of Willunga Hill, it was Eleonora Ciabocco who finished as our best-placed rider, coming home in 15th place. Her result on the day also means she moves into the lead of the young riders classification.

Speaking after the stage, Eleonora Ciabocco said: “Today was a really hot day, even from the start. Rachele and Becky did an amazing job following attacks and getting to the car for ice and bottles. That was really helpful. The first ascent of Willunga Hill was already really hard. Thanks to Josie, we were able to come back. After that, there were a lot of attacks on the flat section, but I think Becky covered them pretty well. On the final ascent of Willunga Hill, I tried to follow the first group, but the pace was pretty high, so I rode at my own pace and finished in the top 15.”
