Tour du Rwanda – Race Report

Tour du Rwanda

28th February – Stage 5: Rusizi – Butare

The toughest stage in terms of accumulated altitude gain lay ahead of the peloton on Friday at the Tour du Rwanda. Team Picnic PostNL set out with the goal of keeping Oliver Peace and Juan Martinez safe and in position to go for it over the ascents.

An early break formed out front and built up a large lead but back in the peloton the race split to bits over the highest climb of the day with Martinez and Peace making the reduced yellow jersey group after some good teamwork. With still over 70 kilometres to race, the tempo remained on and the original move was eventually caught. This saw a continuous flurry of attacks in the peloton where the eventual stage winner made his move. Peace and Martinez could finish in the main group alongside the rest of the GC contenders, with a sixth place for Peace on the stage.

After the finish, Peace expressed: “It was the hardest day in terms of total climbing here. Juan and I made the split with the GC group over the top of the main climb which went up to over 2500 metres. We then were responding to attacks for the rest of the stage basically. We unfortunately missed the winning move but still managed to finish on same time as the main GC guys and I’m happy to have picked up another top ten on the stage.”

27th February – Stage 4: Gisenyi – Gitesi

The shortest open road stage of the week awaited the peloton on Thursday at the Tour du Rwanda, with almost 2000 metres of elevation gain packed into just under 100 kilometres of racing. It was a steady start to things though as a break escaped early on, before the pace began to increase over the ascents.

Team Picnic PostNL rode well as a group and kept each other safe, as the kilometres ticked by. On the descent after the climb of Rutsiro the race split up with Juan Martinez making the front yellow jersey group, after some good positioning work by the team. From there, those out front would go on to contest for the stage win with the eventual stage winner escaping inside the final few kilometres. Martinez finished in the group of 16 that was three seconds in arrears and with that moves into tenth place on GC with the team.

Speaking after the stage Martinez expressed: “I am really enjoying myself in Rwanda and in my first race with the team. The beginning of the stage was very calm but after the second climb we went very fast on the descent. The team made a big effort to close down those ahead and I attacked on a small stretch of the climb. From that, I managed to get into the main group going to the finish; it was a spectacular job from the guys today. I am looking forward to the next stages here with the team and I believe I can do a good performance but we will see how the race goes day by day.”

26th February – Stage 3: Musanze – Gisenyi

Another challenging day in the hills awaited the peloton at Tour du Rwanda on Wednesday, with a 121 kilometre route from Musanze to Gisenyi. Things settled into a familiar rhythm early on with a break escaping up the road and all Team Picnic PostNL riders remained in the bunch. Some good teamwork from Pavel Sumpik and Mees Vlot saw Jacob Bush, Oliver Peace and Juan Martinez make the front group ahead of the last climb.

There the pace ramped up even more and the bunch thinned down to a front group of 19 as they crested the summit. Peace and Martinez rode well to cover the moves and things would ultimately come down to a reduced group sprint. On the technical run-in things split up ever so slightly, as Peace brought the team home on the day with Martinez just behind him. It’s a result that sees the duo move up on GC with the hardest stages still to come.

After the stage Peace said: “Again it was a hot day out there. We sat back in the beginning before positioning ourselves well into the finishing circuits climb. Juan, Jacob and I made it over in the main group the first time up the climb and covered the moves well. The last time up the climb Juan managed to attack but couldn’t quite split it. Together with him I made it over with the group then we did our best in the fast final but were out of position into the last 500 metres to go for a result.”

25th February – Stage 2: Kigali – Musanze

Racing in Rwanda continued on Tuesday with a 112 kilometre long stage from Kigali to Musanze. Tackling three climbs and spending several kilometres over 2000 metres in altitude it was set to be a challenging day in the saddle, as the sun beat down over the peloton. The team once again worked well as a unit as the day progressed, looking after each other and trying to shake up the race on the climbs. However, a headwind on the ascents made this more difficult to do so the stage would come down to a reduced group sprint. Following on from the seventh place the previous day, Oliver Peace produced a good turn of speed once more after being well positioned by the team to take a fine fifth place on the stage.

Speaking at the finish Peace expressed: “It was another hot day in the mountains. We rode well again as a team and got involved on the penultimate climb as well as the final climb where we tried to open the race. It was a little bit too much of a headwind to split it on the last climb so it came down to a super fast sprint after the descent. Jacob moved me up in the last kilometre and then I tried to come round in the final few hundred metres but it was just a bit too fast.”

24th February – Stage 1: Rukomo – Kayonza

After Sunday’s prologue, the Tour du Rwanda continued with a rolling first stage, which on paper looked like one for the sprinters. Four riders formed the break of the day, while the riders from Team Picnic PostNL’s Development Program stayed together in the peloton and tried to put the pressure on in the uphill sections. As the finish drew closer, the break started to fall apart, with the last attacker caught three kilometers from the line. From there, the fast men took over, with African champion Mulubrhan ultimately taking the win. Oliver Peace was the first Team Picnic PostNL rider across the line, finishing in a strong seventh place. Pavel Sumpik also finished in the bunch and took over the lead in the young rider classification.

After the stage Peace said: “It was a super hot first day, and we worked well together as a team for most of the stage. As the race heated up, Mees, Juan, and I took turns attacking on the final few climbs, with Pavel and Jacob sitting in. Everything stayed together until the last climb, where I found a gap with about 550 meters to go and tried to lead Pavel out. He didn’t quite have the legs to follow, so I pushed on to the line and didn’t lose to many places.”

23rd February – Prologue: BK Arena – Amahoro Stadium

The Tour du Rwanda got underway on Sunday with a short three and a half kilometres long prologue in Kigali. Without much elevation, it would be a test of power and cornering ability. Team Picnic PostNL all left the start ramp with the goal of giving their all, with solid times set by each member of the squad throughout the run. It would be penultimate rider to go for the team, Pavel Sumpik, who set the team’s best time – stopping the clock at the finish in three minutes and 55 seconds – an effort that secured sixth place come the end of the day.

Sumpik expressed: “Today’s prologue was hard. It was only over three kilometres but it was still really important to have a good pacing plan. As I stared in the second part of the start list, my teammates told me some information for that and some other bits about the course, so I’m really happy that I was able to show my part on the road. It is so nice to see that everything is going well already in my first start in Team Picnic PostNL colours. For the next stages I hope we can continue to work well together here and it would be great to get some more nice stage results.”
