15th October – Stage 2: Chongzuo – Jingxi
The second day of racing in Guangxi saw Team Picnic PostNL go on the offensive, with Frank van den Broek making the day’s breakaway to try and gain some bonus seconds. It was a strong six rider move that went up the road and in the first intermediate sprint Van den Broek missed out on the top three. However, he remained strong and over the only climb of the day forged on with two other riders in the break. Holding off the peloton at around 20 seconds for over 20 kilometres, Van den Broek was able to get one second at the following intermediate sprint.
Once that was done, he returned to the bunch with ten kilometres to go where the team had bubbled up as a group, ready to prepare the sprint with Pavel Bittner. Some strong teamwork saw the sprint train bide their time before moving up with around two kilometres remaining, floating near the head of the peloton. Coming into the last 500 metres Casper van Uden hit the front with Bittner in his wheel, before Bittner launched his sprint at around 250 metres to go. Unfortunately, stage one winner Magnier came out from Bittner’s wheel with speed and took the win, while the Team Picnic PostNL rider took second on the day.
Bittner said: “I think after yesterday we had a good recap; we made some mistakes there and personally I was not at my best. Today we went in with a clear plan again. Frank went into the breakaway and did a good job there, and picked up a bonus second, and was really strong. While in the peloton we entered the final really well together. I don’t think I could have had a better lead-out from the guys so I think today Magnier was just the fastest and strongest. We still have some more opportunities to go for it here so I’m excited for them.”
Team Picnic PostNL coach Phil West added: “After yesterday’s stage where we didn’t quite join the dots, we wanted to make sure that we were more on point today. Frank ended up going in the break for the bonus seconds, and it was a longer day for him but we did take some time there so that was nice. Then we went for it in the sprint with Pavel. The guys were well coordinated and in position to really go for it in the final. In the end one guy was faster, but we can be really happy with how the guys stepped up after yesterday, to get a nice podium result.”
