Tour of Holland – Race Report

Tour of Holland

15th October – Stage 1: Dordrecht – Dordrecht

After Tuesday evening’s prologue under the lights in The Hague, the first open road stage of the Tour of Holland saw the peloton tackle loops on the outskirts of Dordrecht before making their way into the city for the finale. From the start Team Picnic PostNL set out their stall with Fabio Jakobsen, on his return to racing after his collarbone injury, setting the tempo at the head of the peloton behind the break.

That meant the team could sit towards the front and avoid any potential danger or splits on the narrow roads. Eventually those ahead were brought back in and the pace ramped up even further for the finale. Team Picnic PostNL rode well as a unit and coming into the closing kilometres brought forward sprint finisher Tobias Lund Andresen, after some good positioning work by John Degenkolb and Nils Eekhoff. Lund Andresen could then follow the sprint on the inside and produced a good kick to take third place on the day.

Lund Andresen said: “We wanted to be in a good position all day because it was a classic Dutch race with some twisty roads, so we started pulling with Fabio from the start. That was really good as it kept us out of most of the hectic stuff. In the last 25 kilometres, the push started from behind us so we had to use some energy early already towards the intermediate sprint to stay in front. From there it was Nils, Dege and I. Dege did a good job to follow Timo and then put Nils and I in a good position for the deep final. Then Nils did a good push into the key last kilometre and from there it was a clean sprint for me against some of the fastest guys in the peloton. I’m happy with the teamwork and a good third place.”

Team Picnic PostNL coach Pim Ligthart added: “We started with the goal to sprint with Tobi today. With Fabio helping in the chase, it gave us a good spot in the bunch where we could stay out of any problems. Towards the final we saw some good teamwork and we put Tobi in a position where he could have a clear sprint to the line.”

14th October – Prologue: The Hague – The Hague

The Tour of Holland got underway under the lights in The Hague on Tuesday evening, with a short four kilometre blast around the Zuiderpark. Some falling rain just before the start of the stage made for some slippery roads and changeable conditions, particularly those who went out early. That didn’t deter Team Picnic PostNL’s Nils Eekhoff though, who set out fast and set a strong tempo around the course, trying to keep the power down and take the tight corners as best as possible. Crossing the line with a time of four minutes and 31 seconds, Eekhoff moved into the provisional hot seat at the moment. Although he would be nudged down the order, he still ended the day with a good sixth place; with the rest of the team getting around the course in a nice way too.

After the stage Eekhoff expressed: “It was a special opening stage in the dark at The Tour of Holland. In short prologues like this every second counts and perfection is key. Unfortunately, I messed up one corner which cost me quite some time and energy to regain my speed. It’s a shame to not be competing for the win because of this mistake. I’m disappointed with that, but we’ll fight back the next days.”
