Tour of Norway

31st May – Stage 3: Jørpeland – Heja

The penultimate stage in Norway saw a punchy hill-top finish lay ahead of the peloton, with the climb to Heja averaging almost eight percent for two and a half kilometres. Team Picnic PostNL remained in the bunch throughout the day, looking to protect Tobias Lund Andresen and Bjoern Koerdt for an effort up the final ascent.

Over the penultimate climb the bunch thinned down but the team still had four riders in the front group. From there, the race charged into base of the ascent once more, with the team doing some good positioning work. From there, it was all-out on the hill, with Lund Andresen fighting valiantly to finish 11th place on the stage and hold onto seventh overall on GC; ahead of tomorrow’s final stage.

Lund Andresen expressed: “Today was a short grippy stage. It’s was a hard pace all day set by Visma and UAE. The guys positioned me well into the climbs all day, to make it as easy as possible for me. The final really started with 25 kilometres to go when we did the finishing climb the first time. We got over with four guys. Into the final three kilometres and the last climb, Kevin positioned me perfectly and it was just all out to the top. I did what I could with the legs I had today and it left with the possibility of taking a GC podium with the bonus seconds on the last stage. We still have a lot to play for.”

30th May – Stage 2: Egersund – Oltedal

Stage 2 of the Tour of Norway took the peloton on a demanding 211-kilometre route from Egersund to Oltedal. With multiple climbs, including the 16-kilometre-long Sirdalstoppen and an explosive uphill finish, it was a day tailored for puncheurs and climbers with a fast kick.

The break of the day featured three riders. In the rolling midsection, a group including Kevin Vermaerke and Juan Guillermo Martinez managed to get clear, but the peloton regrouped heading into the Sirdalstoppen climb. On the descent of the day’s main climb, a new front group of four riders formed, but they were reeled in with 15 kilometres to go. Despite a blistering pace over the final categorised climb, the bunch stayed together, setting up a sprint on the punishingly steep finishing stretch. Brennan proved the fastest, with Tobias Lund Andresen crossing the line in 4th just moments later. Bjoern Koerdt added a second top-10 result for the team, finishing 8th.

After the stage, Lund Andresen said: “Today was a long stage, and no one really wanted to take control early on. After about 70 kilometers, the peloton split in two, but Kevin and Juan did a great job covering the move to keep things manageable for the rest of us. Once everything came back together, the pace eased up a bit until UAE attacked with a Visma rider. From that point, Tim helped chase it down alongside the other teams to set me up for the finale.

In the final kilometers, my teammates did well to follow the attacks and keep things together for the last climb. In the end, it came down to legs on the final kicker. I didn’t time my effort perfectly but still came in 4th. It’s a decent result, and I’m happy to still be in the GC fight. Now it’s full focus on tomorrow—it’s going to be the day that really decides the GC.”

29th May – Stage 1: Solakrossen – Solakrossen

The Tour of Norway got underway on Thursday afternoon, with a rolling stage. All eyes though were on the weather conditions with strong winds and rain forecast for later in the day. It was a steady start to things with a break of five going clear, but the pace began to ramp up ahead of the crosswind section.

Team Picnic PostNL managed to get four riders in the reduced peloton of around 40, as they continued to battle into the wind. On the ever changing parcours and route direction, the bunch would split up and regather, before another team then pressed on. This battle continued until the finish, but ahead the break continued to work well together. Ultimately one rider held on from the early move to take the win, while Tobias Lund Andresen got up for sixth place in the sprint from the bunch.

Lund Andresen expressed: “Today was a hard day. Everyone knew there were going to be echelons after the 100 kilometre point. Until then it was pretty relaxed in the bunch. Just before we got to that point it started to rain which made it even more hectic. We did well to stay in the front echelons and have four guys in the front peloton coming towards the laps. It kept splitting and then coming back together. We tired to chase down the breakaway but couldn’t quit manage to bring them back. It’s a shame but I think the next days will be interesting for us, and there are already some gaps on GC, so we’re looking forward to the stages to come.”
