Tour of Oman – Race Report

Tour of Oman

11th February – Stage 4: Oman Across Ages Museum – Oman Convention and Exhibition Center

The penultimate day of racing at the Tour of Oman saw the peloton compete over a 181 kilometre long route, made up of mostly flat roads. With a small break up the road, Team Picnic PostNL bided their time in the bunch, keeping their powder dry ahead of the expected sprint finish where they would look to set-up Pavel Bittner. Working at the head of the peloton to close in the last breakaway rider, the team then took more of a back seat and allowed other teams to battle at the front. Biding their time, the team surged forward in the last couple of kilometres and aimed to be in position going around the last corner. Unfortunately, they just couldn’t make it and got squeezed on the outside, so as a result Bittner started his sprint from a distance; ultimately finishing in sixth place on the stage.

Bittner said: “It was quite a long stage but it was all flat, so it was quite easy in the peloton. A small breakaway went clear but the bunch was in control, so we were sat nicely in the peloton and waited until the final. We had the plan of being patient in the finale and moving up a bit later. It was a clear plan but in the end we didn’t do it how we wanted to. We talked about it well with each other afterwards and will learn from it for the future. Unfortunately, Timo and I were coming into the last dragging part too far behind. I could still do my sprint but in the end it was with a 20 metre gap to the guys ahead. It’s a shame to miss out on a nice opportunity in the last sprint here like this, but if we learn from it then it, then it can be a really good lesson.”

10th February – Stage 3: Fanja – Eastern Mountain

After a day for the sprinters followed by one for the punchuers and opportunists on stage two, the climbers had their chance to shine today on the Eastern Mountain finish. A mostly flat parcours beforehand saw Team Picnic PostNL protect GC finishers Warren Barguil and Kevin Vermaerke throughout the day, as things geared up for the final climb. Progressing towards the finish, the gradients got steeper and the pace ramped up with both Barguil and Vermaerke fighting hard. Giving what they had to the line, Vermaerke led the team home on the stage for a solid result – especially considering he was involved in the crash on stage two – while Barguil followed home not far behind.

Speaking after the stage Vermaerke expressed: “Today was first mountain top finish here and it was a shorter and punchier one than we will have on Green Mountain on stage five, but it was the first test for Warren and I in the GC. The guys took really good care of us all day I have to say. On the final climb I just didn’t quite have it to do what I needed to so I’m pretty disappointed with that. Tomorrow we’ll go for it in the sprint with Pavel and we have another nice chance there. Hopefully I’ll feel a bit better from the crash yesterday on Green Mountain and I can recover a bit, so we can try and get a result there and move into the top ten on GC.”
