22nd February – Stage 6: Abu Dhabi Cycling Club – Abu Dhabi Breakwater

The penultimate day of racing at UAE Tour saw the sprinters come to the fore once more. Like in previous stages, a break went clear from the flag drop and the peloton kept them under control throughout the whole day. Team Picnic PostNL set out to keep GC finisher Oscar Onley safe in any potential crosswinds, before aiming to set up fast finisher Fabio Jakobsen for the sprint.

As the kilometres ticked down, those ahead were caught and Team Picnic PostNL moved up well as a unit as the finale approached. Hitting the front inside the last two kilometres, the team brought Jakobsen forward really well, dropping him off in a good wheel inside the final 800 metres. Biding his time, Jakobsen was able to squeeze out from a gap as others surged from behind, showing a good turn of pace in the sprint to take fifth place on the stage.

Jakobsen expressed: “It was superb teamwork from the guys, keeping me in the front until the final sprint and staying safe. When I launched my sprint, I tried to chase Merlier but he had a good jump and was very fast today. I’m proud of the boys and the team. I maybe just missed a bit of that very top speed today but we were up there and in the mix. If we keep working hard then the win will come.”

21th February – Stage 5: American University Dubai – Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University

Stage five of the UAE Tour, much like the previous stage, took place on a flat course and seemed destined to end in a bunch sprint. With around 40 kilometers to go, the peloton reeled in the day’s breakaway. With the Dubai skyline as a backdrop, the peloton powered towards the finish at the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University and Team Picnic PostNL stayed well-positioned and grouped together in the bunch.

In the finale, the peloton was shaken by two crashes, the last one occurring in the final straight. Thankfully, the team managed to avoid the incidents but sprint finisher, Fabio Jakobsen, was caught behind the crash and missed the opportunity to contest the sprint finale. Heading into the weekend, Saturday should offer another chance for the sprinters to Abu Dhabi Breakwater while Sunday sees the final GC showdown on Jebel Hafeet.

Team Picnic PostNL coach Roy Curvers said: “It was an exciting day in the desert. Early on, it looked like a straightforward stage given the breakaway riders, but then Pogacar got bored and decided to join them, forcing the peloton into action. In the end, the break was caught, and the real finale began. With the wind in mind, we had two key objectives: keeping Oscar safe and setting up Fabio for the sprint. As we approached the final kilometer, we were not exactly where we wanted to be, which got us caught behind the crash when it happened. Of course, this wasn’t the result we had hoped for, but at least we got Oscar through the day safely, keeping his GC chances intact.”

20th February – Stage 4: Fujairah Qidfa Beach – Umm al Quwain

Stage four at the UAE Tour saw a mostly flat day in the saddle where the sprinters of the bunch were set to do battle in the finale; however, all eyes were on the wind and exposed areas of road. Team Picnic PostNL set out with the joint goal of keeping GC finisher Oscar Onley safe in the crosswinds and setting up Fabio Jakobsen for the expected fast finale.

Despite a few periods of echelons and action, the route always turned back into a headwind and the front of the race regrouped. The last of these regroupings happened just before three kilometres to go, and with Onley safely in the peloton, the team focused on bringing Jakobsen forward. It was a hectic battle in the headwind but Niklas Märkl and Tobias Lund Andresen were able to drop Jakobsen off in the final 400 metres; where he used his experience to weave his way through the chaos. Showing some good speed in the finale, Jakobsen got up for a solid sixth place on the day.

Speaking after the stage Jakobsen said: “We had a split goal today of protecting Oscar in the GC, which we did well so that was nice, and then setting me up for the sprint in the finish. We had some good teamwork to stay together in the final. In the end it wasn’t a sprint for the win but I believe that we can compete for that in the next stages. The speed is there and the shape is there, so onto tomorrow.”

18th February – Stage 2: Al Hudayriyat Island – Al Hudayriyat Island

The second day of racing at UAE Tour saw the peloton take on the now traditional time trial course around Al Hudayriyat Island. The flat 12 kilometre route was one suited to the specialists, and calmer wind conditions in the opening part of the day lent itself to those going out early. As a result, most teams’ GC finishers headed off first with Oscar Onley doing the same for Team Picnic PostNL. Setting a respectable time of 13 minutes and 50 seconds, Onley kept himself and the team in a solid GC position ahead of the upcoming days in the mountains. It would be Enzo Leijnse who set the team’s best effort of the day, stopping the clock nine seconds faster than Onley.

After the stage Leijnse expressed: “It was pretty straight forward time trial to be honest with the straight roads and fast corners. Personally, I’m happy with how the time trial went today and with the power output I did, and I could stick to the pacing plan we had. Oscar is still in a solid position in GC which is good, and we have some opportunities in the next stages to focus and go for it in the day results.”
