UAE Tour Women – Race Report

UAE Tour Women

8th February – Stage 3: Al Ain Qasr Al Muwaiji – Jebel Hafeet

The queen stage of the UAE Tour Women awaited the peloton on Saturday with the traditional summit finish atop Jebel Hafeet. Before getting there though, the peloton were exposed to crosswind sections and the race briefly split into pieces. However, returning to more sheltered areas things regrouped and it came down to a battle on the final climb. Some strong positioning work by the squad saw Nienke Vinke and Pfeiffer Georgi brought to the fore, from which it became a race of attrition as the kilometres on the slope ticked by. Georgi and Vinke dug deep, with Vinke taking a good eighth place on the stage while Georgi fought to the line and moves up to tenth on GC.

Vinke said: “Today we worked really well as a team. The girls did a really good job in positioning Pfeiffer and me during the crosswind sections and before the final climb. There were echelons for a while but in the end everything came back together. We started the climb in a good position, thanks to the good lead out. Pfeiffer was able to do a really good climb and she moved up a spot into the top ten of the GC so that’s really good, and I gave everything for a day result which was for eighth place in the end. I blew myself a bit up because I tried to follow the best climbers for a bit too long, but when you don’t try you don’t know and it’s something I can learn from for the future.”

7th February – Stage 2: Al Dhafra Fort – Al Mirfa

Similar to stage 1 of the UAE Tour Women, stage 2 was a flat stage. In the desert, there’s always the risk of echelons, and today these echelons did form in the peloton. From the start, a group of five riders, including race leader Wiebes, broke away. The peloton spent the entire day chasing the breakaway, but they worked well together and were never caught. Wiebes took the win in the sprint, while Pfeiffer Georgi was our first finisher in 16th place.

After the stage, Georgi said: “Today was a fast-paced race right from the start, with echelons forming from the very start, from kilometer 0. We made a few mistakes in the second half of the stage, but we’re staying motivated and focused on bouncing back tomorrow to deliver a strong result for Nienke.”
