Volta ao Algarve – Race Report

Volta ao Algarve

22nd February – Stage 4: Albufeira – Faro

Day four of racing in Portugal saw the peloton take on a hilly stage and one that potentially could have been an opportunity for the breakwaway. However, with only a four rider move going clear at the start of the day, it was clear that the sprint teams wanted to set up some kind of fast finish. Like in previous stages, Team Picnic PostNL rallied around fast finisher Casper van Uden, keeping him safe and preserving as much energy as possible over the hills ahead of the sprint.

Coming around the final roundabout the Van Uden was behind last lead-out man John Degenkolb who tried to help move him up, as the road began heading upwards in the closing 400 metres. When opening up his effort, Van Uden was hindered somewhat but managed to squeeze out a gap, and fought to the line for ninth place.

After the stage Van Uden said: “The boys today did another good job today. Unfortunately, I was a little boxed in but still rode a decent sprint. We’re making good steps so we’re excited for the next sprints.”

21st February – Stage 3: Vila Real Santo António – Tavira

The third stage of the Volta ao Algarve took the peloton over a rolling course but always looked like a prime opportunity for the sprinters. The early breakaway was caught at the foot of the final climb, with the bunch cresting the summit all together. With 23 kilometers to go, the race was shaken up by a crash involving Romain Bardet and Romain Combaud. Combaud was able to continue, but after a roadside check, the team and Bardet decided that the Frenchman would abandon the race, keeping his health and long-term goals in mind.

From there, the focus shifted to the sprint. Team Picnic PostNL worked strongly as a unit at the front of the bunch to position Casper van Uden for the finale. Bram Welten delivered a strong lead-out, but Van Uden had to launch his sprint just a little too early. Despite a long, powerful effort, he was passed in the final metres and crossed the line in fifth place.

After the stage Van Uden said: “First of all, it’s a shame to lose Romain in this race. Hopefully, he’s doing alright. His abandon gave us extra motivation to fight for a strong result. I think we did a lot of things really well, even though I might have launched my sprint just a little too early. We gave it our best, and overall, I think we can be happy with our performance today.”

20th February – Stage 2: Lagoa – Alto da Foia

The second day of racing in Portugal saw the peloton take on the first GC stage of the race and the summit finish on Alto da Foia. However, unlike previous years it was a different side of the ascent, with some steeper ramps towards the top. Throughout the day Team Picnic PostNL rode well as a unit, looking after each other over the undulating terrain and bringing Max Poole and Romain Bardet into position for the finale. Over the penultimate climb the pace increased and the bunch thinned down with Bardet trying a few probing moves but he wasn’t able to drag any groups clear. When things then stalled and the tempo went out, a group attacked on the last climb and Christen would ultimately hold on to take the stage win. Behind them, Bardet rode strongly to take a fine fourth place on the stage.

After the finish Bardet said: “It was a good day and the hardest stage here in Algarve. Max and me got really good support from the guys so we approached the climbs at the end in a very good position. I went on the attack as Max could sit in the group behind. I felt really good and could take fourth, so it’s a positive start to the season.”
