27th March – Stage 4: Sant Vicenç de Castellet – Montserrat Mil·lenari

A potential day for the breakaway, Team Picnic PostNL and Frank van den Broek had marked stage four in their calendars as one to attack. It was a fast start to proceedings and a big fight to make the move, with the team prominent in several attacks, but eventually a group of 12 jumped clear that included Van den Broek. However, the peloton kept them on a tight rope and didn’t allow the advantage to go out too far. On the climbs entering the last 60 kilometres a duo attacked from the break, while Van den Broek formed part of a chase group. However, despite their best efforts, all of the breakaway was reeled in throughout the remainder of the stage, with Van den Broek caught on the lower slopes of the final ascent.

Speaking at the finish Van den Broek said: “It was a pretty hard start and I was on my limit to get in the break. UAE kept pushing in the peloton so we had to keep riding to maintain a gap, and I was suffering. On the flatter part in the middle of the stage I recovered and started to feel really good actually. Then once the hilly zone started there was an attack from Steinhauser and I was at the car at that moment so couldn’t really react. I was in a position to chase but knowing the gap to the peloton we had no choice but to go full, and we then got caught on the lower part of the last climb. It’s unfortunate that the peloton didn’t give us some more room. I’m starting to feel stronger and stronger, so I’m happy with today and with some nice racing. I’m looking forward to tomorrow and a sprint chance with Pavel.”

26th March – Stage 3: Viladecans The Style Outlets – La Molina

With nearly 5000 meters of elevation gain, stage 3 of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya was one for the GC contenders. Team Picnic PostNL started the day with a clear plan: if a large breakaway went up the road, they would join the move, while a smaller break would mean keeping their focus on opportunities later in the week. In the end, only four riders made it into the break, so the team stayed grouped in the peloton and rode a controlled stage.

After the finish, Team Picnic PostNL coach Pim Ligthart reflected: “At the start of the stage, we kept an eye on whether a big group would go clear. If that happened, the plan was to send Robbe Dhondt or Romain Combaud up the road. If it was a smaller break, we would stay together in the peloton. In the end, a small group went, so we stuck to the plan and remained in the bunch. Tomorrow presents new opportunities for our team, and we’ll go all in for them!”

25th March – Stage 2: Banyoles – Figueres

The fast men had been eagerly anticipating stage 2, which took the peloton from Banyoles to Figueres. The two main obstacles of the day—the Coll Puig del Peni (4.8 km at 5.0%) and the Coll de Sant Pere de Rodes (7.7 km at 6.4%)—were positioned well before the finish, making a sprint in the streets of Figueres the most likely outcome, although the final few hundred meters did rise slightly.

The break of the day was formed by four riders, but after more than 100 km of racing, the peloton reeled them back in. Shortly after, the bunch split in two, with Pavel Bittner caught in the second group. Team Picnic PostNL took control at the front to bring Bittner back to the first group, a mission they successfully completed just in time for the tense finale to begin. The peloton thundered under the flamme rouge at full speed. Pavel was impressively positioned by Nils Eekhoff, who delivered a strong lead-out. When Pavel launched his sprint, he came very close, but in the end, he had to settle for 5th place.

Bittner reflects on the stage: “It was again one of those days in Catalunya. The race really kicked off on the second long climb, and I couldn’t follow the fastest guys, but thankfully, the whole team stayed with me. It was a real team effort today, and I have to thank the guys for that. Thanks to them, I got back into the bunch without wasting too much energy. In the final part of the lap, Patrick did a great job positioning us, and then it was just Nils and me in the run-in. Nils stayed patient and launched me on the left side—it was the longer way around, but we carried a lot of speed. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a completely clean run and had to hit the brakes a little. Still, I kept believing I could win today, and I felt really powerful in the sprint. I tried to close the gap, but I just came up short. Looking at the positives, I’m really happy with how we raced, and hopefully, that win is coming soon.”

24th March – Stage 1: Sant Feliu de Guíxols – Sant Feliu de Guíxols

For the fourth year in a row, the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya kicked off in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, which also hosted the stage finish. On paper, the rolling stage—with its 2,765 metres of elevation gain and slightly uphill finish—was tailor-made for a variety of riders: puncheurs, strong-climbing sprinters, and fast-finishing climbers all had reason to look forward to it. In harsh, wet conditions, the breakaway of the day consisted of four riders, but with the peloton in pursuit, the leading group was reeled in more than 50 kilometres from the finish line.

From that point on, it became a war of attrition, with the peloton gradually shrinking. Pavel Bittner and Frank van den Broek remained present in the group battling for victory, but in the final kilometres, three riders managed to break away from the reduced bunch. Bittner fought for a top-ten finish but ultimately had to settle for 19th place in this challenging stage.

After the race, Bittner said: “We started today’s stage with a clear plan: we wanted to go for it. Right from the beginning, we were looking for a breakaway opportunity with Frank, but it didn’t work out. Still, the team was present, and we positioned ourselves well in the bunch—that was a solid start. Then, the race was heavily affected by the weather, which made it tough for everyone. I felt strong, and we approached the final lap in a good way. At one point, the race just exploded, and the pace was incredibly high. Frank and I managed to stay in the front group, but I lost a bit of power before the final sprint, so I couldn’t fight for the win today. Still, I’m happy with how my legs felt, and tomorrow brings another opportunity—hopefully, we can go for the win. Unfortunately, Timo crashed, but he seems to be okay, so we’ll be back at it with the full team.”
