Vuelta a España Week 2 – Race Report

Vuelta a España

6th September – Stage 14: Avilés – La Farrapona

With the steep slopes of the L’Angliru behind them, the peloton went climbing again on Saturday afternoon with a short but sharp stage to the summit finish on La Farrapona. As in previous stages, Team Picnic PostNL aimed to make the break with at least one of their climbers and see how the stage played out, hoping to fight for the win come the end of the day.

Despite an attacking start, the main break of the day went pretty quickly with Kevin Vermaerke in the move to represent the team. Gijs Leemreize formed part of a counter attack and he too soon bridged, meaning the team had two riders in the group of 24. Their gap at one point was allowed to expand to six minutes but the peloton began to up the tempo and that was almost halved as they hit the penultimate climb. There Leemreize did what he could to help Vermaerke, before the American climbed well over the top.

On the lower slopes of the last climb Soler made was his stage winning attack, while Vermaerke paced the climb behind him. Agonisingly he was caught by the GC group at two kilometres but fought to the line nonetheless, taking a solid 12th place on the stage come the finish.

After the stage Vermaerke said: “The break went pretty quick today actually and I could make it in there much easier compared to other days. At one point we had a six minute gap I think, so we were hopeful that the GC guys would take it a bit easier after yesterday and we could fight for the stage win today. In the end though Soler was too strong for me but it would have been nice to have finished top three, but the GC group came with two kilometres to go. After that was just a time trial to the finish.”

5th September – Stage 13: Cabezón de la Sal – L’Angliru

One of the hardest stage finishes in cycling awaited the peloton on Friday afternoon at the Vuelta a España with the famous climb to Alto de L’Angliru and its savagely steep gradients. Potentially a day for the break, Chris Hamilton tried to bridge to the front group for the team but returned to the peloton. Ultimately though, it was a day for the GC riders to come out and play, with the peloton keeping those ahead in check.

Team Picnic PostNL rode well as a unit to keep each other safe over the preceding climbs and on the twisting descents, bringing young Colombian pocket climber Juan Martine into position for the last climb. There it became a race of attrition and a grind, with Martinez having to let go of the wheels of the red jersey group as the screw turned. However, he kept up a strong tempo and rode it all the way to the finish to take a good 15th place on the day.

After the stage Martinez said: “The team today focused on me for the final and they did a spectacular job all day to keep me in a good position. Then over the climbs I still had Kevin and Gijs with me and they rode really well. Having them meant we were always at the front and in a good position to start going down the descents, and were able to arrive safely onto the last climb. From there, I just gave everything I had to the finish line at the top. I can only say thank you to the guys for a spectacular job today.”

4th September – Stage 12: Laredo – Los Corrales de Buelna

A day that looked perfect for the breakaway at the Vuelta a España unfolded in exactly that manner, with a huge fight to make the day’s breakaway. Team Picnic PostNL were present in an original 30-or-so rider group with Bjorn Koerdt, before a counter-attacking group featuring Gijs Leemreize and Chris Hamilton bridged across; making for a roughly 50-rider breakaway; or in this case peloton.

From there the pace stayed high but with such a large group the attacks from the attack started in the valley road before the last climb of the day. A group of six went clear with the Team Picnic PostNL trio in the chasing move. On the ascent the pace ramped up even more and riders attacked out of the chasing group and went over the top of the leaders. Hamilton dug deep and was the last surviving team rider on the day.

Team Picnic PostNL coach Phil West said: “It was another classic break royal day in the Vuelta where it was massively hard to get into the move. We had Bjorn in a fairly big group and then Chris made a good move over the climb to go in a group of five and Gijs also joined, so in the end we had three guys in the big group. It was then about playing your cards a bit as there were quite a few attacks in the valley. The final climb was always going to be critical and in the end it came down to legs and who could follow. We saw some really committed team work from the guys today to get in the race and make the break, and we will continue to do that here in the coming days as we try to animate the race once more.”

2nd September – Stage 10: Parque de la Naturaleza Sendaviva – El Ferial Larra Belagua

After the first rest day, racing returned on Tuesday afternoon at the Vuelta a España. With some flat and rolling roads in the opening 100 kilometres of the route but no major climbs to contend with, it was set to be a fierce battle to try and make the day’s breakaway. Team Picnic PostNL once again set out with the goal of being in the race and getting at least one rider in the move.

Rotating through the attacks well the team kept trying as move after move was brought back. The fight for the break continued for over 80 kilometres before eventually a large group of 30 riders, that featured Gijs Leemreize and Kevin Vermaerke, went clear. However, their gap was only ever allowed to expand to three minutes 30 seconds, so the pressure never truly disappeared from the peloton.

Nonetheless, due to it being such a large group the tactical games were played at the head of the race, and a few riders slipped clear. Not represented in the front, Vermaerke put in a strong effort after some good teamwork by Leemreize to bridge to the leaders. Ultimately though he had spent too many matches and when the break reached the climb, Vermaerke had to let go of the group. In the end only three riders from the break held on for the top placings on the day, with the GC riders battling it out behind.

After the stage Vermaerke expressed: “It was a super hard day of racing, probably the hardest day yet. We knew it would be a big fight for the break after the rest day and it was even bigger than expected; it was full gas racing for 100 kilometres. Eventually a big group of around 30 went and Gijs and I made it in there. We could settle down for a bit but we had to stay sharp that a smaller group would probably go. When Vine attacked on one of the earlier climbs I was straight in the wheel but kind of burnt myself trying to follow and exploded a little, so I had to sit up and take a breather, but missed the move that went across to him. Gijs did a good job to keep the pace up in the chase group and in the valley I could attack and bridge up, but I think I burnt a few too many matches on that bridge so couldn’t follow on the last climb. It was a hard day of racing but we can take a lot of confidence from the shape so we’ll keep trying and the group is really motivated.”
