Vuelta España Femenina – Race Report

Vuelta España Femenina

9th May – Stage 6: Becerril de Campos – Baltanás

A potential day for the breakaway, stage six saw a big fight at the start of the day with attack after attack in the peloton. Eventually after 40 kilometres of racing a group of 19 formed out front that included Pfeiffer Georgi and Franziska Koch for Team Picnic PostNL. For a short while it seemed that the break would extend its gap over the peloton but through a combination of a lack of cooperation out front, and a chase from those that missed the move; things regrouped.

A flurry of attacks followed but things settled into a rhythm and a reduced peloton tackled the last uncategorised climb together. Some good positioning work by the team saw Megan Jastrab brought to the front as the race plunged down the descent towards the finish town. There, a twisting and grinding uphill final 500 metres awaited the peloton where Jastrab gave it her all in the sprint to take a solid eighth place on the stage.

Jastrab said: “Franzi and Pfeiffer were in the early breakaway of the day and after it was brought back the girls were covering the moves before we started to focus on positioning. From the intermediate sprint until the three kickers in the final, Josie and Mara kept us positioned first team. They were so strong today and just kept coming back to keep us positioned. Over the final climb I was with Franzi and she guided me through the descent and then Eleonora came to help move me up with one kilometre to go. I was on a good wheel but went right instead of left with 500 metres to go and then just didn’t have the legs in the end on the uphill drag. I’m grateful for the team’s support today and just wish I had a bit more for the sprint to pay them back for everything they did today and the other sprint stages.”

8th May – Stage 5: Golmayo – Lagunas de Neila

After the previous day’s hilly finale, Thursday’s stage five saw the first big climbing test of the Vuelta and the summit finish atop Lagunas de Neila. To get there the peloton would have to traverse rolling roads throughout the day, and part of the steep climb on a sighter ascent, before tackling the six kilometre climb and its nine percent gradients.

Team Picnic PostNL rode well as a unit throughout the day and some strong positioning by the squad saw Eleonora Ciabocco and Nienke Vinke well positioned going onto the penultimate climb. On the steep kilometre towards the top a strong tempo was set and the bunch was obliterated, with the Team Picnic PostNL duo just losing contact towards the top. However, some great riding on the descent saw them return to the head of the race.

A steady tempo followed before the pace ramped up on the approach and onto the lower slopes of the last climb. It was once again on the steep kilometre, which this time was at four kilometres remaining, that the already small GC group splintered further. Ciabocco and Vinke dug deep and fought all the way to the finish, ultimately crossing the line in 14th and 17th place on the day.

Ciabocco said: “The team was perfect today. Me, Mara and Nienke tried to stay together when the others then followed the attacks. The weather was pretty bad in the first part of the day with a lot of rain but we managed it well. Going into the narrow parts and the first climb we were really together as a group – Franzi, Megan, Pfeiffer and Josie did a great job at keeping us safe and brought us into the climb in the top ten. That was amazing; they did a really incredible job. From then it was just about the legs. Me and Nienke, like yesterday, lost some metres on the steep part but we were together over the top and could come back on the downhill. Then we tried to position ourselves for the final climb, and everything exploded on the steep part again, and we tried to go as fast as possible to the finish. Tomorrow looks like a nice chance for us as a team and then after that it is the final climbing day. Overall, I’m just really proud of this team ride today – they looked after us and positioned us really well.”

7th May – Stage 4: Pedrola – Borja

After a TTT and two sprint stages, the fourth day of racing in Spain saw the peloton take on some climbs, with a punchy final ascent and downhill run to the line. From the start of the day there were multiple attacks, with Team Picnic PostNL keeping tabs on the bigger moves, but ultimately nothing could break clear.

That meant the bunch was altogether coming onto the last categorised climb of the day with around 15 kilometres to go. On the ascent a strong pace was set and the bunch whittled down, but the pace really ramped up in the final kilometre and the group shredded. Eleonora Ciabocco and Nienke Vinke just couldn’t pass the summit in the first group and tried to chase back on the descent, but the pace was high. The duo were joined by a large chase group which also featured Mara Roldan, and the trio then pushed all the way to the line to finish 26 seconds behind the stage winner.

Ciabocco said: “Today was the first stage with some climbs and I think we raced well as a team. Mara and Josie did a good job in the first part positioning us, making sure we were always together as a team. Then in the downhill Megan and Pfeiffer kept us towards the front. On the last climb Nienke and I tried to follow the best. It was all good until the last 400 metres where we lost some distance to the front group, so it was just me and Nienke trying to close the gap on the plateau which was hard. A group then came to us from behind, which included Mara, and then we all just tried to decrease the gap until the finish. It’s a shame to lose some seconds in the GC with Nienke because we did a good race today and can take a lot of positive points with us from today. Tomorrow is the first uphill finish so we will try and do our best with Nienke there.”

6th May – Stage 3: Barbastro – Huesca

The third day of racing at the Vuelta España Femenina saw the peloton take on a flatter stage with a sprint finish into Huesca expected. However, all eyes were on the wind conditions as exposed road throughout the day could cause echelons.

Team Picnic PostNL set out with the joint goal of protecting GC finisher Nienke Vinke, while looking after and setting up Megan Jastrab for the fast finale. The team did just through that throughout the afternoon, even trying to split things themselves in the closing 20 kilometres with a fierce acceleration. Ultimately though things regrouped and the day came down to that anticipated finale. Th team brought Jastrab forward well, dropping her off in a good wheel with around one kilometre to go. Surfing those ahead of her in the finale, Jastrab showed a good turn of speed to get up to take a nice fifth place on the day.

Jastrab said: “We started today with the goal of setting me up with a chance to sprint and making sure Nienke finished safely. It was another wet start and a long section that was always twisting and narrow. Once we got to the open parts we were sharp on potential echelons forming. It didn’t split completely, but there were people getting dropped with the wind. For the final we decided to focus on the roundabout with just under three kilometres to go and the girls were great. Franzi did a massive turn and then Pfeiffer led me through in second wheel. For the last two kilometres I just followed wheels. I was comfortable and moved up going into the final turn, but not enough. The person in front of me lost the wheel and I had to start sprinting from farther out than I wanted as I needed to try and close the couple of bike length gaps that had formed. I’m relearning how to ride the finals again, so I’m making some mistakes, but I think with the belief from the team and confidence I am getting, I think a nice result will be coming soon!

5th May – stage 2: Molins de Rei – Sant Boi de Llobregat

Stage 2 served up a deceptive challenge right from the start. Rolling out from Molins del Rei, the peloton was immediately faced with a steady uphill drag: 12 kilometres at a grinding 4.1%. It was the kind of start that sapped the legs and shuffled the deck early. From there, the route rolled across undulating terrain all day. The finish contained a sneaky uphill kick in the last kilometer, just enough to catch tired legs off guard.

From the gun, attacks came thick and fast, but no one managed to open up a real gap. After just over 30 kilometres of racing, it was all back together. Team Picnic PostNL stayed alert and rode attentively at the front of the bunch. The rest of the stage remained tightly controlled, and all signs pointed to a sprint finish. In the technical finale, both Megan Jastrab and Franziska Koch were still well-positioned at the front, but just over 100 metres from the line, a rider crashed right in front of Jastrab, taking her out of contention. Koch managed to launch her sprint and crossed the line in 7th place.

After the stage, Jastrab said: “We rode really well as a team today. Nienke and I were always protected and it was nice in the bunch to see that we were always complete and having each others back. The beginning had a 10km climb which was challenging but I made it over in the front group and from there it was full focus on the sprint. The girls were great in helping me with all the roundabouts in the final, but with a bit more than a kilometer to go I had needed to find my own way. I was in a good position for the sprint and was confident that I was fighting for top three. In the final turn a rider took it a bit too fast with the wet roads and slid out in front of me and I had to stop. I wish I would have set up the turn to the inside, but that’s in hindsight and we will try again the coming days to get a nice result!”

4th May – Stage 1: Barcelona – Barcelona

La Vuelta España Femenina got underway on Sunday afternoon with an eight kilometre team time trial around the streets of Barcelona. With only five corners throughout the route, it would be all about maintaining a steady speed and taking the turns as best as possible.

Team Picnic PostNL were the eighth team down the start ramp and the squad rode a very smooth and controlled effort. Maintaining their tempo throughout the eight kilometres, they stopped the clock with a time of nine minutes and 39 seconds; moving into the provisional hot seat. Ultimately some other teams would go faster but the team ended the day in sixth place overall, just nine seconds down on the winners.

Experienced road captain Franziska Koch explained: “I think we did a solid TTT. For quite a few of the girls it was their first ever TTT, but still we managed to keep it a really a smooth ride. Riding as a unit is the key to a fast ride and we managed to execute the plan well so we can be happy with that.”
